LOL, I love this guy's eyes... he looks like you've surprised or scared him... and you should be the one who is scared. Interesting, all those little white dots everywhere. I'm always amazed at stuff we don't see with our eyes but capture in a macro.

Best to you,
Dave

LOL! Well, in our part of Ontario, there are no poisonous snakes. Most of our snakes are just little wigglers, and the big ones eat mice. After having cleaned a couple cabins that the mice got into, I very much like anything that eats mice!

After my run-in with a rattle snake tonight (3rd in 4 days)... why am I selecting a snake picture to look at??

Nice colors, though!

That sounds like a plausible theory. It's a pretty wild looking flapper. See ya 'round.

Sometimes they're docile, and just sit there. I'm thinking that since she's a female and only has to send out scent to attract a mate, that the females aren't as active as the males who have to go chasing after the females. The male certainly took off, I got him out of the box and onto the log and he immediately started flapping, I could only get a couple grab shots of him when he fell to the grass before he took flight and disappeared into the treetops. After taking pictures I put her back into the box and kept her safe in the house during the day, then when it got dark we took the screen off and put the box out on the balcony, she flew off during the night.

I have seen similar moths (might not be exactly the same species) in India. Very good capture. Looks like a ballet dancer in frilled apparel, hands spread, heels together, dancing on toes on a dark floor.
Best wishes...

I'm curious. Why didn't the moth just fly away?

Chelsea,

Thanks for sharing this series of pics with us. It is always rewarding to experience nature at an intimate level. I, for one, have never seen a Luna Moth. You must have enjoyed the experience immensely.

Fantastic shot, even the focus could be a bit more sharp... that is very original for me, I never have seen it before, very good.

Thankyou Marcus. Yes, they are a bit too fast, this one had warmed up in my hands and was bound and determined to get away. It was also late in the day and I was tired after working, and didn't want to keep it overnight because I've been told that this species usually hunts at night, and I didn't want to deprive it of a meal. They're not "rare", but uncommon around here, and rarely seen. I'm thinking of putting together some kind of tray with a "natural" bottom for when I come across little critters like this, can place them in there and take photos of them.

Very nice Chelsea, I like this snakes colors, Beautiful yellow and green. The capture with the fork tongue out is excellent. Did you think of putting him down in a natural looking area for composition or are these little guys too fast?
Great work..
Marcus..
