Hi Julia, I like your portaits, but from your portfolio, I like this one the best. You handled the lighting and DOF very well and I especially like how you composed the model. Great work! Dan

Julia:

Not sure why no comments on this one. Maybe I
stand alone(which I do often) but I think this is
cool shot, and very appealing. Beautiful eye contact.
About eyes, see Martha's photo you commented on about
eyes.

Best regards
David

i really like this image, even though it seems to be somewhat soft in focus. i like the positions of her arms as they make the image more dynamic and adds some contrast between her hair and the top she is wearing. congratulations on a wonderful image of a darling model.

Hi Julia, Welcome back.

Thats very interesting costume and pose. Im not sure if the cutting fingers and elbow bothering me... may be a good idea to keep'em in, i think, what say? Lighting looks very nice as usual.

Elangs.

Hey Thanks , Everyone!

Rob - It was just the regular Kodak B&w select - I think I got it at the drugstore.....definitely not one of the fancier films.... : )

Yeah, I really like this. You seem to have a good feel for natural light -- that's the key, I think. The only thing I would try to improve on this one is the catch light...as was already mentioned, I think. I'm also a sucker for shallw DOF. Hey, which 400 film is this?

This is excellent, great seperation, blurr, expression, angle of the head, catchlight in the eyes - if i had a little terrence version of the editor's choice thing this would definitely be in the runnings

Thanks for the comments! I'll have to experiment with that crop. I only wish I could use it for a NYIP project - it seems like my shots never fit the assignment and when they do, I think they look weird..... I did really like the previous post I did of her - which I thought I could use for the 'one light plus reflector head shot' but I don't know....

Thanks again!

Man what a difference a trained eye has. I would never have picked out those areas to look more closely at...the eye for example. It is true now that I see it. Still a great shot though.

Hi Julia, Nice shot. This would have been great if you had some catch light on her right eye too... (I dont know, how you could get catch light on the shadowed part of the body... maybe with a reflector... Well, I dont know.)

Is this for any NYIP project?

Nice shot. I like the shallow DoF.. good tonality. I'd have cropped it just a smidge higher on the bottom of the frame.. but this is just fine. Good job!

Thanks so much for your comments!

Brendon - I always have trouble with hands......ugh!

Honey - I will definitely look for that book!

Rob - thanks - I'll try to keep the weight issue in mind : )

There's so many parts to getting a good shot - thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely be posting more from this shoot!

Lighting is fine -- I think my only comment would be that there's a bit too much weight on the hands. You don't notice it much because she's young. Older people will get wrinkles and facial distortions when this happens. I don't have as much problem with the "hiding" factor because you've framed it nicely around her face and not in front. Great job!

Julia, I agree with Brendon that the composition and the lighting in this portrait is done well. However I have to say that I don't much care for the pose. First let me say that I am extremely critical when I do a critique and I point out what I feel can be improved upon and why. When I do portraits of children, I try to capture their spirit "charm." I think you have her charm,( that would be hard to miss) but as for her spirit, the picture is too stoic. Give her something that she cherishes such as a pet, or fingering a piece of jewelry (She looks a bit old for toys) She likes music I am sure, play some of "Her" music (Not yours.) Don't hide her face with her hands. She is beautiful so show it. I looked at your other pictures of people and you are really doing well. Keep trying. ~Honey. OH btw if you don't already have it go out and buythe book called. Creative techniques for photographing children by Vic Orenstein. It was a big help for me.

Julia. A very lovely young lady. An excellent job of composition and lighting. There is nothing really wrong of the position of her hands, but folding her fingers will be a bit pleasing.

Hah...I remember this one, Julia (hiya!! I see warmth and maybe just a *little* bit of humoring to the look you captured.

Regarding Mary Sue's comment, I agree that it's starting to get a bit hot in the left side of his face. I didn't recall seeing that problem in the version I saw elsewhere (believe it or not, I've remembered it over the months) and went back to check it...indeed, it shows up a little hotter and not quite as contrasty on usefilm.

Very nice job on this potrait. This could be my monitor, but it looks like there is a bit too much light on the left side of his face (camera right). If I had to suggest any improvement regarding distractions, I'd suggest cloning out the uneveness in the background: those stripes on the upper left pull the eye away from your main subject. I am very impressed though, I'd never be able to get a portrait that is posed but looks this natural!

A wonderful portrait that you should be proud of. The lighting seems very even and natural and I like the nice big catchlights you got in his eyes. The hand in the lower left corner seems unnatural though... maybe a different placement or if we could see more of it?
All in all, I think you've got a winner.
