I loved the idea dear Rafael, very interested image. I'd love to see the original without the postwork too, and the postwork seems to have suited it very well.
best wishes,

Dear Nick,

Here I add the original of the photo, it in fact had softer colors as you suggested. I now get to understand that the "patterned" look of many of the photos I upload here are because I play with their lights in microsoft picture manager. I dont like doing heavy postwork but I have a tendency of increasing contrasts-- I recently started to understand that it contrasts doesn't go well with every photo :P

to your question, it is not a scanning of a printed photo. I still use film, I get it developed and then put directly into cds, without getting the prints out (because its too expensive). although I try to work with photography stores which are good and cheap at the same time, I usually dont feel happy with the results, the photos have scratches and spots and often the colorings come out incorrect (when they use in sufficient developers or overdue ones). then I open up the digital programs and often end up with artificial looking results. I will take this comment of yours as a warning to be more careful in that,

best,

Dear Nick,

thanks for your precious careful comments as always. And sorry for replying so late, I could only recently return home and got my internet working from my own laptop. You are right, it would look much better with some more of that background. I couldnt do that because there were other people and other walls around there, which I thought I wouldnt be able to include in a nice way.

The women is my aunt and she was not posed at all. This photo is from the graduation of my two cousins and it was a happy and tiring day for the family... but not only tiring, there are many other things here, which I think have reflected on her face, and I dont wish to write these down here :)

And on the patterns you are right again. after your previous comments I have learned to upload pictures as big as I can, just a few kb smaller than 400 kb. I dont know why it still looks so patented in UF, because the original in my computer is not like that.

Thanks again,
cheers :)

I share and understand this grief. we sometimes experience the same kind of hate crimes in turkey.

Your photo is an aesthetic way of informing people dear friend, it gives me hope to know about people like those who put that flag there and others who do what you do. and it's nice to see you back around,

Hello Armen,
Thanks a lot for this warm reply. Although I strongly believe in dialogue between Armenians and Turks, to say the truth I was still a little worried when I wrote that comment to your page (I thought, would you be prejudiced against me because I'm from turkey?)

Yes there are many people in turkey who accept the genocide. You probably also know about the campaign this year in turkey, "we apologize from the Armenians" campaign, which created quite a debate. Which is better than silence. Much more than the people who explicitly say its a genocide, there are those who say that terrible things have been done to the Armenians, but they dont call it a genocide. They have their reasons for that, but regardless of those reasons, I find a question raised by some (esp. Baskın Oran) important: couldn't we have a better dialogue on the topic if we didn't tackle so much on what to call 1915, if we all accept it was horrible and unjust, is the question.

(Of course I at least have an idea on why it is important for Armenians to call it a genocide or just a bad event; I just wanted to tell about a view from here. As you know there are many different arguments around here. Hrant Dink has struggled so much for all these to be spoken about, and it it mainly thanks to him that Turkey talks about this now)

I remember I had commented before on some of your photos, though not about the genocide. I was then looking at your photos because I was curious about Armenia and I looked at "Images by country" selection. I will be very glad to go on talking about these matters with you. For what is done in turkey, you can take a look at www.hranticinadaleticin.org, it has an english version too (it measn "for hrant for justice").

Warm regards,

zeynep

I'd try cropping out the electronic thing on the right, dear Nick (I don't know what it is). On the one hand it might be contributing to the image as it is better focused and that creates a contrast... But if you reframe it without that device over there, I think the photo would be in soft-focus all over, which might lessen the "too soft" look of it, as you leave out the contrast than emphasizes the softness. I'm not sure, just a suggestion. The framing could also look more interesting then, as it will loose some balance. What do you say?

Cheers,

zeynep

Kalimera Dear Nick,

I liked this image, like many of yours. Some of yours are really excellent, perfect and I enjoy looking at them. But this one I enjoyed for a sense of imperfection, somehow. It also gives a very strong sense of time to me, something more than what is given by light.

More than that, I wanted to say I enjoy reading your comments to other people and to your own images as well. Whether I agree or not, reading your views stimulates my thoughts on photography. I like the general idea that it should be the photography that is to talk, if there is anything to say (but do I do that myself, no, I'm extra-talkative and I speak a lot with words!!); photographers just see and report, yes, but that is how we talk in photographs, as your comments suggests (at least this is what I get). As you probably understand, I have also read today's featured critique by you, and the discussions on that page.

In your profile you say you're a scientist, I wonder what branch is yours. I study sociology. So I also wanted to say I think it might be little too positivistic to say you just see and report. I think we also take sides in photography, and I like that. It is also political to say something is not political, as you know. Of course, maybe when you say seeing and reporting you also mean all those other aspects of communicating.

Hope to see you back around soon,

Best wishes,

zeynep

The lady is protesting the assasination of Hrant Dink, dear Luis. Hrant Dink was an Armenian journalist and activist for peace, he was from Turkey and he indeed was a great person... Killed by Turkish nationalists on 19.01.2007.. It was a crime well known by the state long before it was committed; I can say it's like the state did it on purpose, they wanted Hrant Dink dead.

1500.000 stands for the number of people killed in the Armenian genocide in 1915, +1 stands for Hrant, unfortunately.

Upon the murder of Hrant Dink 100.000 people marched in his funeral. "We are all Hrant, we are all Armenians" has become a widespread slogan against discrimination and nationalism in Turkey since then. We are still protesting the horrible justice system in Turkey which still hasn't called many of the responsible buraucrats to court. (Last weekend we made quite a long chain of people, demanding justice... I wish I could put photos here to usefilm, but I was among the demonstrators without any free hands)

Anyway, anyone can take a look at Google for the details.

Dear Armen, this is heartbreaking but I am happy to see this image here, to keep Hrant's memory. It indeed is a strong image. But I wish you provided people with more information on the situation, because people really don't know about it.

My best wishes,

Zeynep
