Thank you all very much. I was just getting my tripod planted to get a few shots of the sunset and the rays of light coming through the clouds. As I was looking through the view finder to set my exposure I saw the kids coming into the scene..I metered from the trees and dropped it down slightly as I quickly fired a few shots. This was the only one where the kids were clear and not in the sunspot. Thank you all again.

LoL…I am actually quite embarrassed that I didn’t correct the horizon before posting this picture. I will post the new edit soon. I had some time to capture this scene, and have many different shots of it. I do have some where I have isolated the boat and the sunset, but it just seemed to lack something…though, after seeing Brigitte’s version I have warmed up to them. (And thank you Brigitte for that edit, I never mind..feel free.) Thank you everyone for your very kind words on this picture. I took almost 1000 shots over the week, and this is one of my favorites. I was even hoping the people with the boat would hang around in the morning so I could get an email address and send then a copy, but they were gone when I woke up…at noon ;)
Cheers,
Trevor

This actually isn't a fire... it is a pulp and paper mill, the fire is actually steam being released. The orange color the steam has is due to the HPS flood lights that illuminate the mill at night...and also the steam as it drifts in the wind. I was amazed at the results after i took the shots, and I am also in a hunt for a better, closer vantage point to get more dramatic shots.
Thank you for your great comments on this one. Feedback like this inspires me to spend a little more time hunting for the next version.
Regards,
Trevor

I did think about cropping the right a little more, but my concern was the mountain in the background behind the people. When I did the crop the angle of the mountain seemed distracting to me so I ended up leaving enough of it in the frame that it would not look odd.
I will look into it again as there is something else I want to try on it at the same time.
Thank you very much for you idea, and I will also say, you pictures are amazing. I see we have the same passion for water.

I like the darker colors in your shot. Unfortunatly, my shot was a bit overexposed due to the white sand and I had to tone it down a little and crop the right. I tried the shot with an 81A warming filter but I did not like the results as it seemed too fake.
Thanks for the comment James,

Regards,
T

Yes I did use a little fill flash to make the flowers stand out without overexposing the background.

I was probably using a 1a skylight filter as that is on the lens most of the time. The only other filter I own is a polarizer. The WB was set to auto (-1), and it was a 30 second/f8 exposure at dusk. I shot many pics that night ('Empty', also on usefilm), and many had the same blue cast. I think the blue is from the brighter blue sky to the left, outside the shot.
Cheers,

Thank you very much Luk for your thoughts and ideas. I especially like what you have done with the pic as I can now clearly see your idea. The perspective change is what it needed....but I have a noob question. Were the adjustments you made with the brightness alone, or did you change it in other ways? Also, which program did you use? Thank you again for your thoughtful insight.
Regards,
Trev

Great candid shot. You could sit in McD's eating BigMac's until the end of time and never get a shot like this.

No.... no whales on this trip But the tide was going out while taking this shot, so the boat was a real pain to get back on the trailer....felt like I was lifting a whale

I used a circular polerizer taking this shot. I took 6 shots, each time adjusting the polerizer and camera angle just a bit.

Yes, that is grass growing on the roof. It really is an intresting cabin which I have used may a roll of film on. Almost every angle will give you a great shot.
