Photographer: Veerle Vercauteren (Karma=103)
Brussels, Belgium
About: once described as:
Naftalina, Veerle Vercauteren in her non-photo life, originally a linguist specialized in Portuguese language, art and culture is a Belgian "part time" photographer based out of Brussels. She captures people, emotions and situations the way she goes through life: with a passion. Limited by a full time job, her photography is done when others are sleeping, in airports or train stations, and places that you and I try to avoid. She turns every day life situations into a movie still and urban decay into a painting, either in dramatic black and white or using vibrant colours. But place her in the most photogenic landscape and she'll have immediate image block or concentrate on a detail that nobody else seems to be interested in. A constant element of her work is that with one click, she captures in only a few seconds the essence of a situation, and tells you a story that will either make you laugh or break down in tears. Naftalina has a love/hate relationship with digital cameras and would love to go back to pinhole cameras and glass plates if only time would allow...
