You're wrong about my not wanting to know, George. On the contrary, I find it fascinating. All children in our schools are now required to do what we call "root-work", i.e. finding out about the origins of their parents. Unfortunately the only infgormation I have about my parents is that my father was born in Poland and immigrated at a very young age to Germany. About my mother I know close to nothing and in that respect I find every genealogy very interesting. Rachel, on the other hand, knows more about her family. Furthermore, having spent the years between ages 3 and 8 in an British detention camp on Mauritius, she has recently published her memories from there in about 30 short stories in a book called "Sweet lemons", adopted and published by our National Museum and Institute for the Study of the Holocaust, to be studied in our schools. I've so far translated six of these, partly funny and partly sad stories to English and if you would like to read them (2-3 pages each) please send me an e mail to rafael1930@bezeqint.net with "Usefilm, Rachel's stories" in the subject line and I'll send them to you. Thanks for the interesting information, Rafi

OK, Rafi, you asked for it. My wife is working on my family's genealogy. According to her research, the Mediterranean branches of my family tree include Greek, Spanish (Menorcan), Italian, Corsican. The Italian branch includes a forebear named Buchany who was allowed to leave Italy (Livorno) for Menorca because he had emigrated from Hungary possibly as part of a Jewish community. The Buchany's were then brought to this country as indentured servants to work in the indigo trade by one Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician. And that, as we say, is doubtless more than you really wanted to know. ;-)

Thanks for the information, Georege. Croats and Mediterraneans I never would have guessed. The others I might have. In case you have not yet been there and having been to Croatia twice, I can only recommend it. As to the Mediterranean, which part was it, if I may ask? Regards, Rafi

Well, Rafi, you are right about this being my younger granddaughter, but not about my nationality. We have always lived in the USA. My genealogy includes Scots, Croats, and a whole stew of Mediterraneans. My wife has strong Irish roots, and we recently visited her cousins in Ireland. The pictures from there might have misled you about my country. As for your "typo," I can only empathize when I see some of the strange words that appear in my commentaries. ;-)

Speaking of mis-spelling, did you notice how I mispelled my own mame? Regards, Rafi (this time correct)

A lovely portrait of what I surmise to be your grand-daughter. Well fitting caption for the surprised look you captured on her pretty face. If you'll excuse the pun, the golden curly locks on her forehead are worth their weight in gold. By the way, I thought you were Irish and here you seem to have a grand-daughter in the US. Thank you, George, for your very kind comment on my "Inverted wineglass." Best regards, Rafu
