Just a super portrait Roger. Her Kimono is quite a stunning garment. To bad we are so drab comparitively in this part of the world.

The yukata looks similar because it is worn the same style, Cessy, but it is essentially light summer ware, worn with only the lightest of underclothes (if any) and is inexpensive, being made of cotton, not costly silks or brocades. They also serve as nice dressing gowns in centrally heated houses. Patterns are generally blue on white, although young women can wear other colours. Probably more than you wanted to know...

thanks Roger :) what is the difference between Kimono and Yukata ? I heard sometimes the japanese wearing Yukata (which in my eyes look like exactly like kimono)

Dear Cessy, this dress, called a kimono, has many different parts and is quite difficult to put on. I know grown women who have to go to a beauty salon to get help putting on their kimonos! But it is a very beautiful form of national dress. The patterns are all more or less appropriate for different age groups, so you have to keep buying new ones every ten years or so, or people think you aren't dressing your age!! This child's kimono could not even be worn by a teenager... My wife has several beautiful kimonos that she can no longer wear. Funny, huh?

Hmmm. Something to look forward to, John! I did some fairly careful work on the white balance. Her complexion WAS rather sallow... I hate to add to the western preconception of Japanese as "yellow" but the colours are fairly true. I considered selective desaturation of the skin tones but must confess I didn't think of adding catch lights to the eyes. My PS skills are very limited and I am reluctant to over-use them.

Hello Roger. sorry to have been absent but the new job is eating up too much time! Its worth it though as you will see in some future postings. This is a charming capture. I wonder what the transit system lighting is doing to the colors? If you have time, you might want to PS in a catch light in her eyes. It would make a nice pic even better! - JB

Aha! Score one for film, then. You want grain, film has it, Lily... specially the 400 and 800 ISO emulsions I use. Although I can remember back to when 100 ISO slide film had more than I now see at 400 in negative film.

Sharp with beautiful colors and details. I like the film grain. When I try to add film grain using Photoshop, it never comes out looking this good. Excellent portrait, Roger.

Roger, this is only the second 7 I've ever given. I'm not big on kid pix but this is amazing! Beautiful little girl and her photographer did her well. Wonderful capture! The contrasts of red, black and white are stunning. I really love your newfound appreciation of saturation. Just kidding...my observation...Great work and I like it very much.

Thanks, Ceman, but the graininess is mostly due to the use of 400 ISO film, I'm afraid. That, and some necessary sharpening that tended to exaggerate the grain a bit. Glad you liked it!

this is a great capture with all the contrasting colours. a bit grainy but im sure its all because of usefilm's limitation on pixels.
