I think your crop is the perfect balance between the two, Sheila! Actually, I can't take credit for the whole tree issue, because that really wasn't what I was trying to do...just a lucky accident I guess! Before I really got into this photography thing I never gave a thought to what was growing out of where...but now I really try to take that into account. There sure is a lot to learn, isn't there?

I'm cracking up now because Sherry just brought it to my attention that you successfully cropped out that lovely tree that was growing out of his head! Well, job VERY well done to you! :)

I'm so silly because when I was originally working on this photo, I got so caught up in what to do with that silly little hand that I forgot about that lovely tree sprouting from his head!

What do you think of this one (minus the blown out corner, of course!)? :)

I agree with you on that lovely tree growing out of his head! I have one of Dakota sitting on the same bench with a tree growing out of her head too! I just loved his sweet little face, so I posted it anyway.

Such a cutie!
I love the sweet smile on his face.
I was going to mention that the only thing that bothered me was the branch sticking out of his head...then I saw what Kathy had done with the cropping.
I think that pretty much sums up any advice I would have too.

Sherry : )

Hi again, Sheila,
Thanks for your nice explanation and also for being so willing to accept opinions. Sometimes I hesitate, because some people seem to get offended, or you get no response at all, which leads me to believe that they don't want opinions. I myself really like the help that many people are willing to give. That being said, of course all art is subjective, and we all see it differently. I would never make another critique if I thought that anyone was thinking that I always think that I am right. I may love what someone does with one of my images and say, "Darn, I wish I had thought of that!" Or I may think that that is their opinion and I don't agree...but I still like to hear it.
Back to your image...I do understand what you are saying. I personally don't think that the closer crop draws attention away from his face, but if you do, then the crop that you choose is the correct one. As far as the sky goes...after I used the levels, and shadows and highlights and contrast I used the burn tool in that part of the sky. Sometimes it's the only thing that works for me.
Sorry for the length here! I'm all by myself here today...I must need someone to talk to! :)

Hi Kathy-

I like how you were able to darken the blown out sky. I adjusted the brightness and contrast with Picture It, but I couldn't adjust it enough to fix the sky without making the rest of the photo too dark.

I'm on the fence with the cropping though. I did crop it down like yours at first, but then changed my mind only because I felt that his hand became too much of a focal point with it cropped so close. Since I wanted the main focus to be on his sweet little face, I cropped it back a little so as not to distract the viewer from what I wanted to be the main focal point (if that makes any sense at all!). What do you think? Do you think that the tighter crop draws you more to his hand? Or have I just been staring at and working on this photo for too long! :)

And- I never get sick of people telling me what could have made my picture better or for re-cropping. Photography is art and art is subjective so seeing another point of view is very refreshing and can keep us from getting stuck in a rut. I only wish that everyone would tell me what they think I could have done to improve. That's the only way to learn and get better, so keep the suggestions coming my friend- I really do love them!

Great shot Sheila! He's a great model...I like Kathy's crop as well, but I think yours is good. I actually like the contrast in the original better. Nice job!

Hi Sheila,
This is cute! I like the b&w tones that you've achieved! I hope you aren't getting sick of me re-cropping your shots, but I took this into PS and cropped it and did just a bit of work on the contrast. I know that that is a personal thing, so I'm not suggesting that this is better, just another option. I like this shot!
