Part of a series on the murals at an upcountry Thai Buddhist wat I've known for more than twenty years. A companion to this particular capture can be seen at

Tried 4 times to reply to the comment, so will make 1 last attempt: the viharn is very much in a Buddhist village wat, but of course Thailand is in what Westerners used to call 'Indo-China', so Hinduism has been a major influence, not least on the visual arts. You'll find plenty of familiar images - not least, Ganesh!

Best wishes, Len.

Hi, Kshitiz - I've tried 3 times to reply to this but each time it's failed to register. Thanks for commenting, anyhow.

Kshitiz - I know what you mean, but it is from a mural in the viharn of a Buddhist wat in the far north of Thailand. Remember that the old way Westerners referred to this part of the world was 'Indo-China' so although Buddhism is the recognised as the national 'religion' of Thailand, there is a strong Hindu influence, especially in the visual arts, even in relatively modest wats such as this one. You'll also find very familiar images all over Thailand - Ganesh, for example, is very popular.

Thanks for commenting.

Best wishes

Kshitz - thanks for commenting. I can easily understand the point you're making, but this set of murals is from from the viharn of an upcountry Buddhist wat in Thailand. As you know, Hinduism had a big influence on South-East Asia - not for nothing was the region known in the West as 'Indo-China' - and this is particularly evident in the visual arts. You'll find images of Ganesh and other familiar figures in Buddhist wats and elsewhere throughout Thailand.

Best wishes, Len

Hey Len .. I feel that this shot has got more to do with Hinduism. and not Buddhism ..from what i know of buddhism .. i dont think that such a thing is actually there in Buddhism..!
