You are a stunning photographer Kim....beautiful portfolio....I just love this shot....would have loved to see more clouds and sky in this pic...just cropping about a 1/3 off on the bottom...but still very very well done

my eyes say this is Dyn-A-Mite! as you composed it...especially with the tall "grass" extending to near the top. are those tall buildings off to the left reaching to the sky? i think the tall grass + tall buildings is a nice theme. excellent work!

Hi Debershi,
I don't think that one is better than the other, it just depends on how you like to shoot. I like to shoot in manual settings, so I like to use the spot metering... this way I can choose which part of the image to focus on for metering.
Centre will just use whatever is in the middle of the frame as a reference and the 3D matrix uses a range of pre-set conditions to choose what is best for the scene you are shooting.

Excellent low angle shot. I have just bought a F80 body. Which metering mode is best for F80 ? I use centre wight metring for the F75.

A stunning sky and detailed reeds, give this a classy, tranquil look, Kim. Effective, graduated colours and polarization. I might crop about a quarter way up the reeds from the very bootonm as tis doesn't add too much.
Evokative title, and the consolation is, October brings very special sunset lighting. It was worth freezing your feet, Kim

Okay, I just HAD to weigh in here with my very personal opinion: LEAVE THE SUCKER ALONE! Although the sky is superawesome in this pic (I love the use of the ND filter, as it creates an excellent contrast with the bright orange clouds), and you could easily make a great photo focusing on this particular sky, it's the foreground that makes this shot unique. I'm usually not one for dark, busy foregrounds, but a) you have light going all the way to the bottom of the photo, and b) the texture of the lillypads mixed with the light on the water makes that part of the pic look like a pattern of fractals, which is tres cool. I also think the composition is great . . . the reeds/grass are positioned to be a focus, but they don't dominate the sky either.
I'm really digging this pic. Weren't you telling me you didn't get any good shots from here? You disgust me. :-p
You and your crazy swamp-mucking (which I have the photos to prove . . . Bwah!) techniques . . . .

Yanno, I should read other ppl's comments before I post my own. Someone said to put the horizon in the center and I was saying move it away, which you've already addressed! And someone else said get rid of the bottom. Guess my thoughts aren't original! heh heh heh
But I repeat, leave it as is; it's beautiful!

I love it, Kim. Very nicely done! For some reason, I especially like the reflecting hints off the water. You've captured them beautifully without blowing it out.
If I had to say something critical (since you've marked this image "CO"), I'd say you could probably get rid of some of the foreground and take the horizon away from that center area. You have a nearly solid line which almost appears as a dividing line.
In fact, if you wanted to make this seem like a medium format shot, you could crop from the bottom to get a square and the composition wouldn't suffer at all.
However, if it were my photo, I'd leave it exactly as is. Be proud of this one!

Beautiful sunset shot, Kim - I love the angle from which you took this, emphasizing the cattails against that amazing sky! If anything, you might be able to eliminate a little of the bottom, which doesn't have too much to hold the interest, especially compared with the rest of this beautiful photo!

I like the color of clouds in your photo.
and You?re right, if her face was sharper, photo was better.
I didn?t use motion blur filter, but shutter speed was 1/8.

Thanks so much for your input... if anything I would like to have put the horizon off centre by even more... this is a crop as the original had more sky, but that made it feel way too centered. Perhaps I should post it to see what people like better. I'm usually not one for putting the horizon in the middle though... feels too balanced. Anyways thanks for the crit!

The lilypads are mostly in the dark with just enough light to see interesting details. Good shot. I would probably crop out the bottom a little bit so the horizon is right at the center... Don't know. Maybe it's just me... somehow the current proportion (not 60/40, not 50/50) ticks me.
