A great shot for the first try at a fairly difficult genre of photography Simon. Try to get hold of a reverse adapter for that same lense - it will allow similar shots without loss of light and you will then be able to use a smaller aperture for more depth of field. First prize though is a proper macro lense and if you can afford it go for a 100mm macro since it will give you some space between the lense and the object. You can also use built-in flash of your camera to good effect, allowing you even more DoF. (have a look at my portfolio - most of my macro's were done with this little flash and a f-stop of 32 on my 105mm macro lense. Three things are very important with macro work 1)Be prepared to get dirty and wet and dont be afraid to lie down to get the correct angle, 2) If you dont have patience now, you will develop some and 3)Learn to look and see - there is a whole new world opening in front of a macro lense. Good luck.
