Winner took all! Unfortunatley for me but I'm pleased enough with 2nd. I'll give it a lash again this year. It should be easier as I got a new printer for christmas (Canon Pixma i9950) so its no hassel getting the prints out. Last year I had to do a fair bit of running around to get the entries in. Also I think I will take a more "ameauturish" approach - last year my very best efforts didnt meet with the desired level of appreciation and having studied last years winners summary its best to be placed in each round than go for the top prize and miss out on points. Pity you missed the first round but I dont think it will matter too much. Definatley give it a go - you are a very good photographer.
All the best, Shane

Cheers Shane. Did you get any more spoils by coming second in the APOY contest? I was going to make an effort to have a proper go this year but I seem to have pretty much missed the first round already!

Kiarang, thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, using Ilford XP2 film, it's very difficult to take anything but black and white! I was using B&W film for some other night work that I was experimenting with in an attempt to get results similar to the amazing work of Michael Kenna. Check out www.michaelkenna.net to see what I mean. This shot was just something I've always wanted to try and now that I've got a fully mechanical Nikon FM2n camera I thought it was probably time to have a go.

Thanks for the comment Chris. Yes, this was my first try. A knowledge of the heavens, as I'm an amateur astronomer, no doubt helped!

A very good idea in long exposure time, it's interesting that you have convert it to BW tones, but the grians are realy distract for this good shot and i think that the colour version could be better to enhance the splendid feeling of earth movement!

Amazing concept and execution. A greuling 45 minute exposure that was well worth the wait. Was this your first try or did it take several tries? I'd love to attempt something like this. Thank you for the inspiration.
