About Volcán de Fuego ("Volcano of Fire") is an active stratovolcano in Guatemala. It is close to the city of Antigua, Guatemala. It has erupted frequently since the Spanish conquest. "Fuego" is famous for being almost constantly active at a low level. Smoke issues from its top daily, but larger eruptions are rare. The volcano is joined with Acatenango and collectively the complex is known as La Horqueta.
Fuego is 12,346 feet high or 3,763 metros.

Here is a little something on the type of volcano:
A stratovolcano (also composite cone or composite volcano) is a tall, conical mountain (volcano) composed of both hardened lava and volcanic ash. The shape of these volcanoes is characteristically steep in profile because lava flows that formed them were highly viscous, and so cooled and hardened before spreading very far. Such lava tends to be high in silica.

This shoy was taken from my brothers house, just outside of Antigua and on the skirt of another volcano.

This so very eerie and dark despite all the bright colors. That top cloud feels like an escaping spirt.

I like the clouds and the contrast of the horizontal water vapour clouds with the vertical steam/smoke clouds. Ian is right about the noise though. Have you tried Noiseware or NeatImage (both for free on the web)? Its an easy fix and one that would help thisimage considerably..

It sounds as though you had a very different childhood to most western children! I can't imagine walking to school through ash clouds, and I was born in a volcanic country too!

Thanks for sharing this Alison!

Wow Alison, what an awesome capture..it's wonderful, the colors are beautiful, the soft and billowing clouds really add a lot of beauty and a moody feel to this for me, the smoke is perfectly presented, and the colors of the volcano itself are so strong. I love this image, it's just beautiful, and wonderfully composed. I'm sorry I've been missing your work...I am way behind in commenting and so glad I didn't miss this, what a treat...very nicely taken and presented...:))Linda

Neal this volcano, has some pretty big eruptions at times, there is a valley between it and most towns. As kids we would go to school sometimes with umbrellas because the ash was falling so heavily. Alison

Wow, Alison, an amazing shot of this volcano! It seems very precarious to live that close to an active one! Great capture of this phenomenon!

This is such a dramatic shot. It must be sort of a scary place to have a home. I wonder what effect this thing has on the air quality of the region. It sure provides good picture opportunities.

You should defenitely go to Guatemala again, it's a wonderful country. The City is no example since it is so noisy and polluted.
The noise on this one came when I did auto levels, it was a very bright day and the original was too much the same color. Alison

What a cool shot, Alison! It's so unusual to see the smoke going straight up like that - usually it gets blown sideways. Those big, billowy clouds are wonderful, too!

Alison, it is a beautiful shot. The clouds surrounding the top of the volcano and the smoke coming out are wonderful. Super.

A very interesting shot of still raw nature,I like the clouds in contrast with the upward smoke eminating from the volcano. A lot of noise though Alison, especially through the sky, maybe a compression problem? I would like to see Antigua. I was in Guatemala City once on business and always wanted to go back, I remember some of the local art was fantastic, also Jade jewellery from the Antigua area? Ian
