g'day Matej, good question, I'd not thought about it like that
I currently have work in a long term exhibition at a hospic, at the opening the well respected and greatly experienced photographer opening the show commented that my work was reminiscent of Henry Fox Talbot's earliest paper neg work, though my images were not of my paper neg series they did have a grainy old worldly aesthetic, anyway this prompted me to re-evaluate Talbot and I was surprised how artistic and interesting his images are, this reinforced for me the notion that the image is more important then how, or with what, it is created
having said all that, another consideration is that used differently any equipment can give a different/not the norm result, for example if I use RC paper and a very small aperture with this 'homemade' camera the resulting image is not unlike a print from my newer equipment, so why bother with the unusual if all I am creating is the usual thanx for your interest Ray

Hi Ray, I've read with interest your response to Sally. By using 'imperfect' equipment, do you aim to develop a different way of looking at the world and then apply this new vision to imagemaking with technically 'correct' equipment and processes, or do you also in the long run intend to stay with the simpler, less technical equipment?

I like your work with the large format view camera. I never got to my own period of using "imperfect" lenses. Maybe I shouldn't call them that. They make things come across on the print that escapes a Schneider or Nikkor.

hi Sally, great response, thank you I did not mean for the details to make anyone feel 'ignorant'
they are what I do and know, just as you, and your work, are what you do and know
your portfolio contains wonderful images, regardless of the technique/equipment used, they have a basic and obvious intent, i.e. to create unique/interesting/beautiful/strong images
my latest images are a response and backlash to the contemporary desire for 'perfect' images
my image making had been too technical, but using these simple materials and equipment has made me re-evaluate and realise that good imaging is not about what you use but what you create

Your portfolio makes me feel quite ignorant - in that only having known digital, some (most) of the things you mention in your 'about', 'lens' and 'film' sections are completely alien to me, and it leaves me feeling quite ashamed! As the processes you use are a mystery to me - all I can say is that I appreciate the end results - this being one of my favourites. I like the colour, the centre sweet spot, and the way the picture frames all appear 'jiggly' - which, having read your comments, I now know comes from lens aberrations - it's very pleasing.

g'day George, thanx for the interest and appreciation this image was captured with a simple lens using a multi holed disc as the aperture, that is the blurring is actually caused by lens aberrations
