match the colours of the muflar of the subject to the background .... I am sure that i can add alot more to it ... the focus is a little out ... sometimes it happens ... dont have A/F lens .... and my focus keeps slipping ...... its a pity you didnt like it :( but keep the suggestions rolling, thanks

Nice Photo, focus could be improved though.
If your based in Delhi... you may want to join this group: www.paai.in/forum/
The group meets up approximately once a month to take photographs. I've learnt quite a bit in the one outing I went on with the group.

Himadri,
Uploading another version of your image. I cropped it for different composition and used some sharping and blur to enhance details.

Hope you appreciate sportingly.

Best regards,
Rajendra

If you are really keen in learning photography then film is the best way to learn. You will get some idea about the D50/D70s in the jjmehta website at www.jjmehta.com.

Himadri Sharma   {K:1187} 7/25/2005
I use a Cosina camera and am hoping to steal my dad's Nikon.

Never the less mine is soft zoom 35-70mm, split focus. I dont trust its light meter and use alot of different stuff.

I will be posting pics each day and please be brutal with the critque

Well as far as my knowledge is concerned which is also limited because im also learning, the grain is may be coming from the scan. Please note that all scans will have a certain amount of grain and so it should be corrected with software like neat image , or photoshop. I dnt think the grain is coming due to large apertures. Please also use different film types such as kodak and fuji , 100asa, 200asa or 400 asa. Naturallt at 400 asa you will get some grains at low light.

As far as night photography is concerned you will need a fast lens to do that for example the nikkor 50mm 1.8, then at apertures of 1.8 or 2.8 with a shutter speed around 1/15 to 1/60 you will get good night lights. But you have to do a lot of experimenting. Again if you want a shutter speed of 3-4 seconds you have to keep aperture setting to F16 or F22.

Thanks for the precious info.... please be ready with more comments for the pic i will be posting tomorrow.

Can you give me some insight on night photography ... if it is picth dark and you want to capture a neon glow ..... should you open the shutter for 3-4 seconds.

Also sone of my pics have experienced alot of graining ... could it be because of over exposue..

awaiting your reply

Yes Himadri , you got that one spot on. This is where the whole DOF or depth of field thing come to play. The more you open up the lens, f5.6 - f4.0 - f 2.8 and so on the depth of field become shallow and thus the background becomes blurreed, with this a shutter speed of 1/125 will give you rich colours. On the other hand if you close the apertures f5.6 - f8.0 - f11 - f16 the the depth of field increases and everything in the background will be in sharp focus.

Thanks .... would use more mentors .... will a larger aperture blur out the background more ... i want to keep the colours :)

Thanks for the reply. I think you have to set priority whether you want the hills as the main subject or the lady as a main subject in the frame. If you want the lady as the main subject you have to blur out the background so that she becomes the most prominent subject in the frame. You will learn fast dont worry. We at usefilm are here to help you out.

Thanks Sanjeev .... words of appreciation mean the world to a beginer such as my self. I am hoping to explore more ans see how the camera sees. I too belong to Delhi, i do however take a a little trip to heavens on earth, now and then. Thanks once again

Himadri Sharma   {K:1187} 7/25/2005
thanks deb .... probably the pic is a little off focus. Yes i have used a mid range zoom lense 35-70mm. I took the background in its wide colour range to match the colours in the muffler of the subject.

I do need to learn a thing or two about subject placment. Thanks never the less

u stay in a great place mysterious is its landscape risin and decline into deep gorges and sky in its deep colour reflecting its keen intrest as a person appriciating its beauty and tellin' its tale in the skies of delhi. hopin to see some "heart pulsatin" canvas from u. i like this word so i am using it second time today. this seems to me is an introductory image of u showin the ur enthusiam and wholeheartedness about photography. and ur other pic is wonderful because where face should be their is camera becomin eyes. i like to describe in few words sometimes i even stop forcing myself to describe this is the same situation here too. i have to stop otherwise i will gone on

Himadri Im extremely sorry for all the typo errors in my post. I today found out that my keyboard is not working porperly and many words have been missed dyring typing. Again sorry for that. I just forgot to write anither point. Try scanning at 300dpi and use softwares like neat image to cut out the grain from your shots.

Himadri welcome to usefilm. First of all you attempt to compose the shot was good but there are few things you might try to correct in your previous photos. First off all the whole shot is outfocused. If you see you wont find a single place where there is sharp focus. This can happen due to camera shake or inappropriate focusing. As you have said that 1-25 was the shutter speed the chaces of camera shake is very little as such a high shutter speed normally negates slight camera shake. Try using a tripod always for best pictures. Secondly you have nit mentioned what lens you used for this shot. If it is a medium zoom then try places like 50mm where you will get the best contrast and sharper focus. Thirdly the background is very distracting as there is both white snow as well as black rock. I think in this frame the black rock would have been much better. you can also crop out the white snow background in photosho and make a much tighter frame. But first I thing you have got to get the focus thing right as a soft focused photo will ruin everything. Happy clicking !
