That Fourchon Beach looks like an interesting place. Do you see any detail on the bird's body on your screen? I have mine calibrated, and its body is flat black (but there is detail in that shadow).

The 300mm f/4d ED-IF is a very fine lens and you won't be sorry. It's money well spent. I use it in the majority of my images.
