Because you can also use this effect to accentuate freckles. And it gave the wood of the violin more texture.

The Lazlo effect is a series of filter used on photoshop to achive a more rich skin tone, it is usually used on older faces to give them more texture. If you google "lazlo effect" you can find more information.
