ok got this all printed off in my note book to save for next year. I like all the tips I can get but as of yet havent changed the settings on my D70. the 5700 is so screwed up I cant even get it back to normal. I wish camera lesson would be now instead of fall.
thanks so much
do you have any fireworks pic on.

Hey Brandy,

Shooting fireworks are a lot of fun and there's some easy steps to get great results. Set your camera to Landscape mode ? typically designated by an icon that looks like a small mountain range. It's the same as setting the lens on a film camera to Infinity. With the camera in Landscape mode you won't have to concern yourself with focusing issues. Or use Manual mode, focus on infinity and set your aperature on f:11 or 16. Use the highest quality-setting to avoid jpeg noise. Definitely use a tripod. You'll need to have the lens open from 2-4 seconds so it's a must. A cable release will help avoid shake even more. Set your camera on ISO 200 and your lens to f:11 or f:16. When you hear the shell fire , pause 1 second and open the shutter with the cable release for 2-4 seconds. Close the shutter and look at the shot in the lcd. if it's too dark use a longer exposure, too bright then a shorter exposure.
If you have a B (Bulb) shutter speed setting you can use it to control exactly how long your shutter is open. The trick is to open the shutter right at the beginning of the burst and close it when it reaches its peak. Anticipating the explosion can be difficult, but not impossible. If you don't have a B setting you can choose a fixed setting, such as 1 second. That's it! I attached a shot I got over 4th of July. Cheers,

-mm

I was using my nikon D70 with the 28-70 lense hand held and all automatic settings. I am not sure but I think on the sports setting.
havent had nerve enought to play with it as I keep getting my 5700 goofed up and cant get it back to the right settings. I am taking classes this fall then will have more knowledge. not good with the instruction books/
I wish I had taken a tripod as the tree wouldnt be so fuzzy. I do like the fire flash the way it is. I got several that I liked for the first time in my life.

I have tried many times to get a good shot of fireworks on the 4th and just never can. This is a nice job. What did you have your settings on? The black smudging on the side (a tree?) is a bit of a bummer. Wish the whole picture could have been of the fireworks. Well done.

Great shot Brandy, I had to look twice at it as its nearly identical to a shot a friend took last fireworks at Clapham common. (Yours is slightly better ;))

Nice one.

Todd.

Nice foreworks shot. They are very difficult. I shot over 50 and not one was as good this one of yours. Good work.
