I agree with lightening the face a little, but the tones are superb here! I love it anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions Paul..I have since lightened the old mans face but as I only have Elements I have used the dodge button. Not a lot I could do about the boys feet as I only had about 3 secs to take the shot.
More help like this is what I wanted from this sight and cheers for that.

I think the faces in the shade should be lightened to reveal their expressions as well. Here's my trick:
In photoshop, I use the brush tool, set to Soft Light Mode, with strenght at about 15%...15%. Then, if the brush is set to white, it dodges. If set to black, it burns in. In either case, it is subtle enough that it looks natural.
Since she's looking at the child, he's the de-facto subject, and it's a shame you didnt' take a step back and include his feet. ;)

Hi Manu, Great to see some work from Sri Lanka. Yes indeed and luckely they are still there! It's a wonderful picture with a story behind it. I like the angle you have chosen to make this portrait. You are at the same eye hight as the kid, that brings the attention first to him and then the rest of the family. It's maybe a little bit a pity that his feet are cut of. The light situation seems a bit difficult; I guess I would have liked to see the face of the man next to the door more clearly (it can be my screen). Then they form a circle around the boy which will increas the attention to him. The rest of the family in the back is ok like it is. It's an interesting portrait that wants me to keep looking at it. It's emotionally stirring to me, and in different levels. Within the context of the tsunami disaster, the fact that they stand and some are smiling is a great affirmation of their resolve to come out of it. The man on the right has a stoic grin, perhaps proud of the little boy and his family. In the shade is an elder no doubt...and has all the reason to smile. I'm wondering what it took for you to gather them together for this great portrait. With whatever it took, I must congratulate you on a job well done.
