I can get the darker background both during and after the shot.
During the shot I use The exposure bias control. This allows you to adjust the exposure compensation from -2.0EV to +2.0EV in 1/3EV steps. The number displayed is the EV bias times 10. And/or... I use Spot metering. Takes a reading only at the very center of the frame and disregards the rest. An indicator is displayed in the very center of the viewfinder (or LCD) when in this mode. A spot meter is used when a subject is backlit or has bright light upon it and the background is dark. It is also very useful for macro photography.
