I'm new to PS also and tried to combine two pictures the other day. I cut triplets out of a picture and put them on a different background. I guess I did as you did as it took a looong time and a lot of patience. I'm sure we'll learn better techniques as we go along.

Thank you Melody for your nice comment. Actually Im new to the PS world too and am learning gradually. I just extracted the flower by erasing the background. Its hard work and takes a lot of time (at least for me). But with time you get used it and some people even have their own particular masking techniques to do it more cleanly and quickly.
