Hi James
Wow - would be a dream come true for me to see the Gorillas - all in good time though. We must please stay in touch - there are a couple of places near Johannesburg/Pretoria area and I could always let you know when and where as it gets closer to your trip.
I also know a VERY prominent Wildlife photographer who has published numerous books - would it not be great if the two of you could meet while you're here.
I'm in awe of your photos - they are superb!!
Regards
Shirley

Thanks for the comment Shirley. Sorry to have made you late. :) It was a fantastic trip to Africa. I was in East Africa on photo safaris from 22 Jan to 28 Feb and visited Tanzania (Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti) for the wildebeest birthing season, Rwanda for five days of gorilla trekking, then Kenya (Samburu and Masai Mara). Then I was in South Africa from 28 Feb to 27 Mar on a self drive, and the main stops were Kruger and Kgalagadi.

I've taken a quick look at your portfolio and will be back to comment. Where did you go to pet the lion? I'll be returning to South Africa this Oct, and would love to pet a lion. I petted a couple of cheetah in Oudtshoorn on a previous trip. Do you know of a place where I could pet a leopard? That's my favorite cat.

I'll be leading a photo safari in Feb 2007 for chimps in Tanzania and gorillas in Rwanda. Let me know if you'd like to come along.

Unbelievable!! Now you've made me late.... I've had to dash through your portfolio - will come back and look at more later. You have absolutely astonishing wildlife shots here James - and wow - what a trip to Africa that was. Noted dates from 25th Jan to 25th March 2005 - how long was it?? Even to see the gorillas - am so envious!! Stunning shots - absolutely stunning - Congrats. More later.
Regards
Shirley

Great shot with the lion looking right at the lens. Love the DOF and the focus of the shot is right on those eyes.

Thanks Darlene. We were safely inside a Land Cruiser, but after this sequence, we did swing around and set up for another series, and then another. He never gave me a look like this again though.

Thanks Kim. Good to know my work touches people. His look is why this image is my favorite out of those I took while he was walking towards us.

I can see why you do this for a living... great shot. His stare has a lot of power to it, and with the straight on camera angle I feel intimidating by this image. Excellent DOF to keep all of the lion in focus while blurring the bg.
