About Well, I'm still trying! For this shot I used my 50mm lens in reverse and held it up to my 18-55mm lens. I was able to get really close, but I?d still like more clarity.

Wow! The colors are fantastic and the DoF is very effective. I don't see much of a problem as far as clarity goes, especially for a retrofitted lens system.

Laurie - this is a great shot. I love the shiney coat that is so clear here. It's WAY better than any I've ever done! Be proud of this work. I love your innovative technique with reversing your 50mm to get the shot - that's creative!
Thanks for your comment elsewhere. Cheryl

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to use a zoom on both sides as I don't have a 50mm in my collection... Maybe an 18-50 on the reverse end of a 50-500? If I can lift it all!!! Can't wait to try it now!!!

Alastair,
Thank you so much! It's always great to hear such nice words of encouragement. :)

In case you do try this technique, I experienced a lot of vignetting (sp?) around the edges of the image so I had to crop quite a bit. I read that it works best if you use a long focal length lens (around 105mm) attached to the camera and then reverse a 50mm lens in front of it.

Wow... wonderfully tight DOF and excellent colours... Great technique too (experimentation is always fun - must try that myself!) If this is still you 'learning' I can't wait for the 'pro' images!!!

Angelo,
You've been a big help. I just ordered a set of extension tubes. I can't wait to start using them. :)

Hi Laurie
the great dominant DOF on the photo but is with of the subject and the composition that they render therefore this image delicate. I appreciate this very invite to the softness! usually the macro they have a perfect one focus on the subject, very is delineated, but in this case (for me) micro render in absolute way the atmosphere in which the ladybug it lives!
cheers
roby

Laurie,

An extension tube fits between the camera and the lens and is totally hollow - i.e. it has no optic elements. It simply decreases the minimum focus distance of your lens (because now what would focus behind the film plane actually focuses on the film plane).

Some of these even maintain your auto funcions (but don't expecto autofocus to work as there is considerable light fall off).

You can buy these individually or in sets of 3 (6, 12 and 24 mm, I think) - Kenko do a set, I believe. I bought a canon EF25 extension tube second hand a while ago, but haven't used it for a while.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Angelo.

I thought I was seeing double w/ Stephen's ladybug pic. :) Great color, nice pic. and "wow" on the lens reverse. You have given me a good idea- I will have to try that.

Angelo,
Thanks for your feedback.
I have tried the screw on close up filters and the result has been ok, but I couldn't get as close as I'd like and the clarity just wasn't there. This was my first attempt at holding another lens up in reverse and I'm pretty pleased. However there is still much room for improvement. I think I'm going to look into a reverse ring.
I should probably know this, but what is an extention tube?

Angelo Villaschi Angelo Villaschi   {K:49617} 4/30/2005
This is a fantastic effort if you are hand-holding a lens to the front of your other lens! Wow!

Perhaps I should look at the rest of your portfolio instead of asking this question, but here goes (please ignore me if you've answered this before) - have you tried close-up attachment lenses? What about extension tubes? They're both cheap alternatives to macro lenses.

Or, if you prefer the reversed-lens approach, what about reversing rings?
