As you know, I love to work with high speed film. Not just under high seed condition ;-) Would be interesting to shot that situation with the smae setup but with the delta to compare. Like the DOF, POF and the most important the mood. BRAVO! CB

Hi Antonio, I used the full frame here, no cropping, and other than a (slight!) increase of contrast (the contrast was already pretty fierce) It was shot through a group of other people, and a part of the series I attached to my reply to Karen Clarke.
"... the photographic eye can work both in the camera and even far from the camera viewfinder..." YES! I agree, taking photos regularly make you aware of specific settings more easily, and makes you look differently at relatively ordinary scenes. That's what I like about photography so much!
Thanks for your comment,
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Elisa, I agree, but the fact that they seem to be looking in different directions also make me believe it's not one family, but a mother and (her) kid and a close friend. The longer I look at this photo, the stronger that impression becomes....

Hi Alastair, it wasn't too difficult to find these people, as it was a wedding crowd which set the mood...:) On the tube it would've been much more difficult, although the people minding their own business, seemingly oblivious of the world around them is also an excellent venue for these kinds of shots. I have such a series in my portfolio, taken a while ago.
Cheers,

Hi Karen, there is more of this in the entire series... I'm not sure if i'll post them, though. Per attached an overview of this series. The thing that grabbed me in this series is the contrast between the darkness (grey, drizzly weather), the dimly lit room and the very relaxed and happy atmosphere. Thanks for your analysis!
Cheers,
Hugo

In my opinion it should be interesting to know if you composed this shot on the fly (i.e.while shooting) or in post process (but the framing of course). I am quite sure you composed it in the first manner; further no problem doing it in the last one; in fact my opinion is that the photographic eye can work both in the camera and even far from the camera viewfinder; inst'it? thus just a curiosity. thank in andvance

I think this is just about the perfect balance in this shot- DOF,contrast,noise...all come together and fill this photo with life. I like the triangle effect of the three of them, taking your eyes on more than one trip around. Interesting how much expression can come across of the woman from such a slight wiew of her face, and as it is with soft focus, contrast and noise, and what difference it would make to the image if if her mouth were positioned even slightly higher on his collar. You can feel as well the child's intent gaze. Great shot to close this series.

A wonderful atmosphere, you did well in capturing the conversation and the expression of both the man and the lady even not clear face expression of here but giving the idea of mutual conversation. The light bit harsh on right side of the man face but still with excellent details. I know it?s a film result, if with today?s semi pro digital camera it will give fantastic result thanks to the multi light meter build in reading. Most I like the wonderful moment capture and well framed subject. Regards. Saeed

As a group of three photos with a common theme these work very well together, Hugo.
Rather than going on about what stories they may or may not tell let's just take them for what they are. Your intention was "atmosphere" as stated and with the choice of BW/grain and use of existing light and the close cropping has all come together very successfully. Well done, Hugo.
Bearing in mind the conditions that these shots were taken I don't think one needs to question too much things like focal points or if the image is sharp or not....but as a group I think that you have managed to capture some wonderful and happy moments in an otherwise pretty obnoxious environment ie the London Tube.
Cheers
Manu

Interesting in the sense that everybody seems to be looking in different directions, still you get the feeling that they belong together. The tie guy meeting his family after work; pure joy can be found in his face. The harsh light does not disturb me at all; a happy moment in the spotlight, very well deserved :)

To me, it's a happy little family sharing a happy little moment, in a harsh world. A life with the brightest of high points, and the darkest of low points, with many happy little moments in the middle. (I like to keep things simple! ;)
To the point, it's a great shot, love the grain...and I think the fact that his crooked tie is in focus emphasizes the fact that he's had a long day at work and is happy to see his wife and child...

Very impressionistic. I think you are using the restricted visual pallette, and the difficulties of the lighting and the circumstances of your shots, very creatively. This exploration of a completely new area of photography is fascinating to watch. Viva 3200 ISO film!

I think that not worrying about a few blown highlights and looking to the bigger picture (much like in the first image in this series) has paid off here. It is not obvious to me that he is looking at the woman and child and my first impression was not necessarily that they are connected by anything other than proximity, I think for that reason. The occasion seems somewhat formal yet this image projects a very relaxed atmosphere.

Again the graininess enhances and engages... and the subjects remain blissfully unaware of the photographer! You have done incredibly well (in my experience) to find so many people commuting in London smiling, let alone interacting with one another! Superb series.... I hope we see more!

Hi Pat, Thanks for your comment. I shot this with a Pentax ME super, a completely manual (film) camera, with only a build-in lightmeter to assist (AV), but with manual focussing. I still might've focused on his tie, though... Thanks for the observation, very useful...

I would like to see even more of this series-as you have said-"it's all about the atmosphere". The darkness erases much of their surroundings emphasizing their closeness as a family. Even with the woman's face mostly dark you can see the great joy she has in what she is saying-maybe a joke about what happened to her that day-and the man showing his interest with a smile. Though it makes me wonder what he is looking at-as his eyes don't seem to look into her face...hmmm... Anyhow I agree it has to be the best of the three. Well done~

The atmosphere comes across very well. A nice capture with great lighting. B&W is a good choice as it brings forwad the emotion of the scene. I like the hard side lighting in this. It drive attention the the man's face.
Did you use AF? The focus point seems to be on his tie rather than his face.
As I read on I am guessing that it is more a result of the long exposure?
At any rate it is a fine photograph and all the techie details do interfear much with the atmosphere...

Hello hugo! The final third image! The link to first images! Have I told you before how I admire your ability to send out a message throw a trilogy! Its not that easy and I?ve learned that the hard way ;) In this image the same harsh light in the first image is visible but in a subtle way! It gives us an idea of why the first man was smiling! Maybe he was seeing what we are seeing now! Family members and loved ones coming together! The same light traping this small young family together I love this one the most! :) 7/7
