Alison, buy a grey graduate filter (Cokin is the most popular manufacturer) and simply hold it in front of the lens when taking, especially with landscapes where the light difference between for and background can be too much. People often think that blown highlights can be rescued by PhotoShop, but that's simply not true. They're cheap to buy, and well worth it.

...or island out of the sun in this case! :) Interesting little island with it's own tree. I like the fringe of grasses at the bottom of the frame, providing something to 'contain' the water. Overall it seems kind of dark to me, though, even though the sky is very bright. Maybe you could selectively brighten the trees a little?
