thanks James, yes certainly better depth here. The beautiful scenery, the limited time I knew I would have and worry about the kids definitely was asking too much of me at the same time. When I came home and looked at my wife's photos I saw so many angles and ideas I didn't even "see". :)

Aaahhhh. This is a much better shot than the first one I critiqued. The poppies in the foreground are distinct, and the clouds create a nice pattern. Nice work here.

thanks a lot Randy. It was made out of three images but the overlap was 50% so it is actually only 2 images edge to edge.
It was an amazing day.

A great image and fantastic work. Shot along the path to 'Oz'? Super combination of the two (3?)images. I totally agree with your camera vs eye register of a scene. Many 'straight' camera shots simply cannot fully duplicate the impact felt by the live view, and sometimes manipulations actually present a more realistic recording. I think you've struct a good balance here,an image I could go back to again and again to take in.

Hi Casten,

The discussion about what is realistic will never end. I have thought about different aspects of it many many times over the years. I came to the conclusion that stating what the camera records is realistic is and any alteration is editing is fake is way too simple. Any camera or film barey records an interpretation of the light for a very short moment.

Our eye adapts extremely well to versious conditions in our world, something a camera can't do in the same way. You have to help the camera and the photo to match what we see with our eyes. Since the retina is part of the brain whatever we see is very much an interpretation of our mind, also.

But beside all the technical aspects of it, I think the emotional aspect is even more important. When we make a portrait of a person we love and we create the most beaiful light and scene and edit the photo the best we can to make that person look as best as possible we simply try to visually match the emotion we feel inside us. We try to show others how we see that person. I think that is a very legitimate way of editing an image and to us it as realistic as can be.

David, really stunning result. No stitches visible, the colours and contrast are gorgeous. Superb composition, Golden section to rule of third. And interesting what Ori wrote - a question of principle I am halting myself. Ori`s argument comes from photographers who are used to take the camera`s view as gold standard. Your argument is just that I am most into. Your photo shows the scene your eyes saw at that moment, quickly correcting the wide dynamic range, automatically. A more "realistic" photo would show a brighter sky with less saturated colors. What is better ? Of course, a matter of taste and photographic attitude.

yes I can see what you mean...this is always the dilemma...great image nonetheless

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 4/1/2005
thanks Peter. When I took those photos I was not sure what to give more coverage, the sky or the poppy flowers. Both were so impressive. I ended up taking photos with focus on the flowers and others where the sky was the main thing. Sometimes I tried to get both in equaly but those didn't work at all. They seem to fight each other for attention.

Great work...seemless stitching...do you think it would add more drama with more sky ??

Splendid scene and sky David! a minor thing but not a big deal, there's a visible difference in contrast between land and sky.

thanks Marusnik, it means a lot to me from some with such a beautiful portfolio.

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 3/31/2005
thanks Jan, the main problem stitching them together was the strong wind. The flowers moved a lot from shot to shot. You can see that a little. To make it perfect I would have to edit it a lot more.

Thanks Amanda, I actually took a couple of B&W photos with my medium format camera but haven't developed the film yet.

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 3/31/2005
thanks Elahe. Do you mean the edge between the sky and ground should be softer? I had a hard time getting this right and yes it could be better.

David Hofmann   {K:22223} 3/31/2005
Thanks a lot Margaret. Even though I enhanced the colors in the photo this is as close to what I remember seeing it with my eyes. I was totally excited when we arrived there and I saw all those colors.

thanks very much Greg. We were very lucky with the clouds that day. A clear blue sky would have been dull.

Beautiful Job, David....REALLY!! The swooping sky is incredible, and I can just imagine what an AWEsome scene this is, in person. Fantastic job on the stitching, too...I think I barely see one seam, but I can't find the 2nd!

Congrats

I can only guess as to how powerful and saturated those red poppies must be (I'm colourblind to red and green tones). Love the depth of perspective here.

great and sucsessful try, beautiful and lovely image.only wish the edge of ground would be little more blury.

Hi Ori,
The sky was a little brighter on the original photo, but other than that I didn't do any changes in PS. Our eyes can take much more dynamic range than any film or digitial camera. Actually this is pretty much as I saw it when I was there.

Good PS work, Ori.
