About Every year in Feb the John Beargrease sled dog marathon is held along the North Shore of Lake Superior to celebrate the life of John Beargrease and Native American who carried the mail by sled dog from Duluth to Grand Portage Minnesota.

The race started today at 1:00PM. originally it was a 500 mile race, but has been modified so todays race comes in at 390 miles. Its for all the world like a baby Ididarod.

I shot some images at the road crossing but didn't like the look i was getting. So I walked maybe a 1/4 mile back on the trail till I came to a hill they had to climb. I backed up till the slope of the hill just disappeared, and set up there.

that way it gave the appearance as you can see here of me being much lower with the shot and they suddenly looked a lot better !

The Dogs now look into the camera but i am still standing upright, because my old knees wouldn't bend anyway ;-)

I am going to post several shots to give you an idea of what the race and treams look like.

If the dogs eyes look transparent blue with a black iris thats the way they look ! A certain breed of sled dog carries that identity.

Also they are small and bred to pull and they love it !!

I have been involved with the race over the years in communications as a Ham operator so I have seen it all. the Mushers love and care for these animals. During mandatory lay overs when they rest them for long periods, the dogs are fed, and attended to before the Musher !

Notice also the little booties, held on by Velcro straps which protect thier feet.

Hope you enjoy this short series.

Cool! Great face expressions on the dogs, especially the one in middle! Looks almost scary with those eyes... almost like a wolf!

Hi ya Jim.....
I love it, great action shot.
This would be so cool to see, excellent colors and very sharp where it needs to be.
Looks cold.......

Jim, you sure picked a viewpoint that gives maximum power. These shots are so action packed. Fantastic.

Don
thanks for the comments They mean alot to me. Yes this was a great trip to the woods. I had time to experiment with different types of focusing. These were shot while the shutter was in rapid fire and the focus on AI-Servo. the problem I had before was the moving target was out of focus before I hit the shutter. in AI-Servo it follows focus for every shot no matter how many you take.
Learning the Canon system has its curve. Unless its a atatic scene, you just don't point and shoot. And Canons nomenclature is a bit different. I am learning and enjoying.
Will post more Race day shots tonight..

Wow Jim, this is wonderful. Looking forward to more of these great pictures. You really have the focus on the dogs. I know about the knees. Don.

Great capture [I feel the same about 'knees'] from a great angle. Thanks for the info and look forward to seeing some more.
