About Every year in Feb the John Beargrease sled dog marathon is held along the North Shore of Lake Superior to celebrate the life of John Beargrease a Native American who carried the mail by sled dog from Duluth to Grand Portage Minnesota.
The race started today at 1:00PM. originally it was a 500 mile race, but has been modified so todays race comes in at 390 miles. Its for all the world like a baby Ididarod.
I shot some images at the road crossing but didn't like the look I was getting. So I walked maybe a 1/4 mile back on the trail till I came to a hill they had to climb. I backed up till the slope of the hill just disappeared as I looked downhill, and set up there.
That way it gave the appearance as you can see here, of me being much lower with the shot and they suddenly looked a lot better !
The Dogs now look into the camera but I am still standing upright, because my old knees wouldn't bend anyway ;-)
I am going to post several shots to give you an idea of what the race and teams look like.
If the dogs eyes look transparent blue with a black iris on some shots thats the way they look ! A certain breed of sled dog carries that identity.
Also they are small and bred to pull and they love it !!
I have been involved with the race over the years in communications as a Ham operator so I have seen it all. The Mushers love and care for these animals. During mandatory lay overs when they rest them for long periods, the dogs are fed, and attended to before the Musher !
Notice also the little booties, held on by Velcro straps which protect thier feet.
Hope you enjoy this short series.

That's a terrific action shot Jim. The expressions on the dogs' faces says they are enjoying it. Your about is such an education as well. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Those dogs are happy at what they are doing, just like you taking the pictures. Great work. I am sure that they would like to have some of these great pictures. Don.

Sled dogs are amazing! We went dogsledding in the UP Michigan last winter and found it remarkable the endurance and enthusiasm of the beasts! If you had to stop for any reason, the dogs would turn and look at you as if to say "Hey! Can we get moving here please? We have miles and miles to cover yet, and we want to run!" So much heart! And if you stopped longer than 90 seconds, they would start to yip and jump in the harness, yanking at the anchor or brake.

Marvelous photo, Jim. You've captured the fire of determination in their eyes.
