About This photo was taken on January 1, 2005 in Rio de Janeiro. I can't understand why these kids were playing in the storm sewage when the ocean was right next to them, but I guess they just really wanted to go diving. There is a black horizontal streak across the top of the photo and I can't quite remember how it got there. I thought of removing it but the more I looked at it the more I liked it so it stayed. As always, no digital manipulation shot on 35mm Fuji Superia.

Thanks for clarifying this for me. I guess when it is blocked by sand it gets a bit stinky, but also high enough to dive into safely? It's a long channel and I have photos from the land side of the channel but they are not as dramatic. Thanks again for the feedback!

Hi,

from the position of the islands this seems to be more the channel that separates Ipanema from Leblon beaches and also connects the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon to the sea, allowing some fresh water exchange between it and the ocean. This channel was never used for sewer. Sometimes it is blocked by sand and when this happens for a long time lots of fishes die on the lagoon. It seems to be the case on your image as there appears to be sand before the sea. Also, on January I believe this phenomenon happened there. Then there's a terrible smell near the laoon, but it's NOT from sewage.

Kids can't jump into the sea as they can on water on this part of the channel. This happens since it was built, just for the fun of it.

Sewer, since the late 70's, is pumped under the sea close to the islands on the horizon. I saw it construction and during it there was an amazing pier that became a surfing point on Ipanema. That black streak probably takes sewer to the pump station. It's there to keep it from the channel.

Just adding information to your nice capture.

Regards from Brazil,

José Azevedo

Thanks for leaving me my first comment and welcoming me to usefilm.com. This site is perfect because I only "use film" and I don't take digital photos. For more photos you can check out my web site www.spiro.ca.

Very good capture Spiro - for me it would be the attraction of diving ... although I hope it is deep enough !!!

Lovely photograph and well composed.

A huge welcome to Usefilm also :-)

Best wishes,
Steve
