About Picture of a ruined homestead outside Redesdale, Victoria, circa 1850. The front door looks out towards Mt Alexander (in the distance). I would bet that the mighty gum tree next to it was there when this place was settled.

This shot was taken at around 11:00pm just as the moon was rising behind me. The glow of the moonrise cast a beautiful orange glow that was reflected off the building and tree.
When taking this shot, there was no noise, no lights apart from the sky and moon, you are overwheelmed by imagining what it would be like back then when the place was first settled.

Thanks James, Jason and Russell. Russell, at first, it was totally trial and error, given the fact that first time at night when taking a shot on the Tv setting, the camera could not get an exposure. From there I knew bulb was obviously required. When I took the first shot at night on bulb, I opened the aperture and just held the shutter open for a measured time. After reviewing the photo I adjusted the time accordingly. I try to remember what the light conditions were that first time and given what time was required for an exposure then, I estimate what I need now based on that. Other than that initial estimate, it is just trial and error and viewing what I get after a given time on the camera...lucky hey. I make sure I give myself heaps of time before the sunrise to ensure I get a few photos to make sure I get it right.

Mark,
Another great exposure on such a long exposure.
How do you estimate the shutter speed you require before setting off for the 5 mins?? You have a digital which would help review afterwards and make adjustments, but do you have any rules of thumb (words of wisdom) for us film based people when preparing such long exposures. Or should trial and error be our best used tool???

Wonderful image, the light is warming and yet at the same time eerie. I think the star trails in the sky look like a million shooting stars and I love all their different colours, gives it a real magical quality. Good composition too.

Thanks.
