About This is named for the pond I wished for...created the reflection and pond in PS...flipped the image horizontally and vertically, darkened, applied soft gaussian blur, blurred the river bank connection...voila! Also was PS work on the upper image (sharpening, levels, color adjustments to selected areas). Just digging and experimenting..hope you enjoy.

Thank you so much Chad. Something tells me you missed that this is a fake reflection created in PS...it was in the "about".... That might spoil things a bit, but it was just for fun. Antonia

Toni, a very nice reflection here, such still water. I usually end up with a duck crashing down in my water shots, haha.

Lilly, that's quite generous of you to say...I'm happy for you to make suggestions any time, and I'll look forward to seeing your additions to Usefilm. Antonia

Toni, Actually the reflection in your virtual pond looked perfect to me. There is no way I could find fault with any of your images because I love it all. Just sharing something I remembered about ray tracing/reflections that's all. Your ideas and pictures have taught me a lot in a short time. Thank you.

Beautiful pond Antonia and fabulous PS work. Again, like Rebecca I would never have known the reflection was added it is so good :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

Great work Toni, I wouldn't have known it wasn't real. I wish you lived closer I would take lessons from you. How about moving to Atlanta. :) The rednecks are mostly harmless and we don't have earthquakes.

Amazingly done Toni! I knew you did something but only to the colors, never suspected the reflection until I read your about, wonderful!

Oh my gooooosh, Lily! That floored me when I saw your explanation! Thank you. To tell you the truth, I was thinking of shortening the reflection a bit, but decided it wasn't worth it, as if I couldn't detect the problem, who else would? Lily....that's who! Bless you. I love your diagrams. (Must confess I'm a shoot-from-the-hipper when it comes to assessing these things...eyeball it, lick your thumb, put it in the air with one eye shut....k...that looks good...lol. Kisses. Antonia

Thank you Mitch, for the kind remarks about my PS skills, but I'm feeling a little guilty taking such a nice compliment about my PS without explaining that this was somewhat easy to accomplish...flip the image, darken, gaussian blur, blur the river bank connection...voila! lol. I'll take a little credit for the PS work on the upper image before creating the bond, but the fake pond was the easy part. Think I'll add this explanation to the about. Hugs. Antonia

Toni - No, I don't think it does because it looks very good as it is. It's just something that occurred to me after I read your description of the picture.

If you look at the figure and consider point A on the tree, the reflected light (the broken up black line) has to travel further then the direct line of sight which is the red line. Easy to see, the sum of the two black lines is longer than the red line.

Assume you are the stick figure, there are two ways to see that particular point on the tree, one just by looking at it (red line) or seeing it in the reflection on the water. The way we see Point A's reflection is through ray of light coming from Point A on the tree hitting the water at an angle (angle of incidence) and then being reflected into our eyes at the same angle,
this time called angle of reflection.

The net effect is that it's as if you're looking at a tree that is further away and so its reflection on water should be smaller.

Let's say the body of the water is very wide and it's a short tree, then the difference in the distance will be small - and I'm meaning between the direct light & the reflected light. So you may not need to distort the reflection in that case.

If you look at Point on the tree trunk (in pink) it's also going to have less distortion since the line of sight will be closer to
the reflected ray of light.

Or, if you get closer to the surface of the water (kneel) then again the distortion will be less.

Toni, I don't know if I explained this well but I'm sure this is more than you ever cared to know.

I thought it was real, but had a feeling like "too perfect to be true" - don`t misunderstand me, but such perfect reflections are rare ;-) You blurred a bit already, hard to decide in this resolution.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30599} 1/31/2005
Thanks Carsten. I'm glad you looked at this...almost said something to you in the about, since your techniques were in my mind. I did a fair share of selecting and adjusting selections throughout, besides creating the fake pond. We're limited to the 800 in each direction, and yes, it's hard to evaluate this size. Did the reflection fool you?

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30599} 1/31/2005
Thanks Roberto...should it be less saturated to make it more realistic? I actually deepened the tone to account for the darkness of the pond (imaginary pond).

Wow, great PS work. The uploaded image is quite small; can?t detect any faults (and you know, I?m picky)

Margaret, thanks, it's good to know re the long image...a risk I took and wondered how it would fly. Antonia

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30599} 1/31/2005
No, Lily, I didn't. I only darkened the lower portion and added a soft gaussian blur. It occurred to me to skew it, but I've seen reflections that are not skewed and decided I liked the feel of it this way. Do you think it needs it?

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 1/31/2005
This is wonderful work, love the colours. I think what makes it extra special for me is that the long narrow composition really adds to the effect.

It fooled me nicely. :-) I thought what a pretty pond. I wouldn't have known if I wasn't told.

Toni, Did you add perspective (or skewing) to the reflection in PS?

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30599} 1/31/2005
Thanks Rebecca, it was fun (and easy as pie). The image had sat in my folder and I loved it but just didn't think it quite made it for me all by itself. Then the idea to do this came as a thought -- if you get lemons, make lemonade (and don't forget the sugar)...lol
