Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Kevin and I have collaborated to create a new image from the one above. See Quick View ID# 6754 entitled The Fog Man.

I accept this silhoutte proposal - it sounds like an interesting little experiment I'd be happy to participate in. Send me an email at hoserhellspawn@hotmail.com and I'll mail you back a transparent photoshop image of said silhouette... I can probably scrounge a couple that would be quite useful for this function from otherwise lackluster photos.

Hi John...like the image very much. I would crop the glow of the light from the first light post right out ... I think it makes a stronger image that way. The way it is now the glow at the top seems to compete with the rest of the image. Just MHO. Hey next time use your self-timer, put on your trench coat and get yourself in the image...*smile*...Maggie

Thanks to all of you for your comments.
The print I scanned did have that first street light included, but when I put a grid on the photo I noticed my horizon was off by a good 2 degrees. Getting the horizon right is a pet peeve of mine (just ask the production manager at the newspaper where I work). Unfortunately, rotating the picture meant cropping a little bit in from the edges, hence the loss of the first light.
I agree that including a person would have improved this shot tremendously. Maybe fogman could email me a silhouette self-portrait so I can put him in the picture. While 1978 sounds like a long time ago, I look at this picture all these years later and I can still feel, hear and smell that night like I was still standing there. I love that about photography. That ability to freeze time.
How long was the exposure? The time it took for the car to move from the fourth lampost, when I started the exposure, until it cleared the frame.

Great composition! I love the way the lines formed by the lights pull my eye into the photo. Nice job.

Just give me a call and I'll fly on down.
1978? This picture was taken before I was born...
The Fog will soon DOMINATE usefilm.com! Ahhhahahahaha!!
Okay, now that those scattered thoughts are out of my system, I also like the analagous warmth and the "to infinity" perspective, whcih of course just adds to the intrigue. How long was this exposure?

Hey John, Very Nice! I think detlef's right, you might have wanted the lamp in the picture, although it might have been too bright.
Thanks for the inspiration.. It's been foggy in the mornings here frequently of late, and I live right near a major highway and many major roads...
There's a lot of fog photography being posted of late.
