Thank you for you comments, James. I indeed was at the Great Wall very recently, just came back from China last Wednesday. The Great Wall photos were taken December 5th.
It was pretty cold in Beijing (and way too much smog) but the sun was shining at the Great Wall and the climbing made you sweat very quickly. Make sure you have enough layers to shed.
those steps look about as steep as the ones at the main temple of angkor wat. in fact, those ones were so steep, i thought twice about how i was going to get down.
were you just recently at the great wall? seems to me that beijing is a bit colder right now than it looks in your photos. the people don't look overly dressed up.
