during the days of communism, the leaders of these eastern bloc countries must have said something like:
"wouldn't it be great if we could look out from budapest and see nothing but factory chimneys?"
mao said something similar regarding tiananmen square in beijing....
nice shot here. factories can be interesting subjects. james

I too am greatful for the tute Gabor. The fog is nice and the heavy factory produced homes. Looking closer at those houses I guess actually the priviledged may be living there. This may be one way to bring real estate values down. Pleased to see this as staff choice.

Diego: That play with layers and masks isn't necessary - it's only my whim to get a foggy effect. The matter is to avoid Desature and prefer to use some channel - Red, Green, Blue or Lightness - it depends on the picture which is the best choice. By the way, you can get the same result using Channel Mixer.Of course, some fine adjusment with Levels (or Curves)/Contrast is always needed.
Regards, Gabor

So many thanks for the tutorial! You know, when I do a b/n I usually don't do all these steps, just desaturate and work on levels:( This is a very precious one, thanks again.

Diego: The secret of the tones is a simple b&w conversion :) In brief: I've converted the original image into b&w (Decompose->LAB Color-> L Channel -> some Levels&Contrast adjustment) I've duplicated this b&w Layer, added a Gaussian Blur effect to the upper layer and set the Layer transparency to Multiply mode. Finally, I've added a Layer mask to this layer. The mask was created with GIMP's Plasma filter.
