It IS difficult Roger, I hate flash but this time I had no choice (BW400CN at Iso 800 too slow).
Tried to stay away from them as far as possible with the 75mm and used the flash handheld at the extended left hand to get the light from the side.
This way the background gets darker and I have a similar effect of isolation like a narrow DOF would give me, but by bright and dark.
A longer lens would have been even better (135) but in a pub you get too many disturbing stuff in your FOV. Life is a compromise !

I was attracted by the title and stayed to admire the expressions you capture on their faces. Perfect! I can almost imagine what they were saying... Lighting is a bit harsh, though, isn't it. Flash is SO difficult!
