yes i also believe this is a strong composition. simple but effective with the shadows. maybe this is digital? the shadows seem to lack a little quality (bit of noise showing up and they do not look so deep) -- of course this could be a result of only looking at the online version of this fotograph? perhaps it does not show up in the final print?

Lovely. Bleak. The ground and sky are great in contrast with textures and shading. I think the darkened sky is a plus because it allows the sand to "pop", so I disagree with a previous commenter.
