Seeing this photo reminds me of how I love driving through the mountains because your sense of scale and context gets completely messed up and you feel so small . . . not in a bad way, but in a way that makes your problems and worries seem but a speck in size and time. It's kind of comforting, I think.
Looking at this photo on my monitor, I don't think the black levels are too high. If anything, I feel the trees in the midground could use just a touch more contrast. This photo is nicely exposed and accomodates both the sunlight on the bright mountains and the gloomy overcastness quite well. The two pillars of yellow are a great touch and provide a bit of warmth to the scene, and I love how the road abruptly disappears into the trees. :)

Difficult to give a useful comment on this one. It's too well balanced and impressive for that. I'll just sit back and admire the view...:) Amazing shot and scenery!
Cheers,
Hugo

Nicely composed JOhn, the slate gray mountians match the sky and overall mood of this picture. The mountian never cease to amaze me with their size and different formations. Don.

Beautiful scene, John. On my LCD screen the black level seems a touch high... although it's hard to see how you could lower it much without losing the delicate contrast between the nearer and more remote trees in shadow, which looks really good. A difficult shot to bring off!
