Hi Becky - perceptive comments as usual. Maybe I need a more serious approach to my own photos. I might have caught this while critiquing other photos, but for some reason I go mainly with instinct for my own stuff. Cropping after rotation might be the thing to do here? I did shoot at the leaf too but they did not turn out quite as well as I saw it.

I like the angle you chose for this photo. I think most people's instincts would be to shoot at the leaf and not across it. This composition creates more depth, IMO.
Have you experimented with cropping this image at all? Removing just a bit of the bottom or right side could eliminate more of the blurry foreground and really pull the attention to the sharpest part of the photo. Also, there's a slight, green vertical line in the background and I feel it interrupts the left-right flow a little. Mind you, it's pretty faint. On a bright day, I probably wouldn't even see it!
Another great addition to your portfolio. :)

Thanks Hugo - In one way this is related to http://www.usefilm.com/image/220797.html which also has imperfections. It makes it a more interesting image to me, but your point is well taken.

Wonderfull drops, dof and focus. You can even see the nerves in the leaf. Excellent! Greets Tim.

Hi Stefan, Let's just first settle on the more or less standard things: the nice DOF, the composition and the tones. All very well done.
For a more complex matter, I think that showing the edge of the leaf, with the black background tells too much of the story. A more abstract and closeup approach of the three levels, zooming in on the leaf would've created a bit more tension IMO.
The texture and composition of the leaf is made almost tangible by the drops; quite oily and coarse surface. That's what attracts my attention the most, and probably why I would've liked to see this one rendered a bit more abstract.
Cheers,
Hugo

Thank you João - I find that I learn as much from analyzing and commenting as I do from receiving commentary on my own images.

Hi Stefan,
I just love most of your photos, but... I don't know what to write about them... I feel that I don't "know" enough to comment some photos.
But to this photo, I have to say something. The composition is great, the black in the background is a great choise. For me, the best detail fo this, is the midle focus, specially, those drops right on the leaf curve. Wonderful. I also like the focus line to end in the top right corner.
Just keep "teaching" us.
Cheers

Hi Stefan - well i shall try to be more specific, i think the angle is perfect but i find the palm leaf (atleast that is what i suppuse it is) to dominant in this picture. I would like to see more background not at the sides they are good but i imagine myself to see the leaf torn from the lower left to the upper right. (how far torn and how wide apart do find hart to specify, think its a matter of testing). But you now thats al to my taste & about the possible emprovement..i am only guessing! - Ed

Thanks Ed - it would be helpful if you could explain how I could have shot this to improve the balance as you see it. A matter of composition or would a crop of the existing image be sufficient?

I love the lines in this... pulling me from the top right corner down around the droplets and then over the roller-coaster of the leaf itself. Perhaps I would have liked a touch more DOF to make everything on that one plane in focus, with the background and foreground out of focus, but truly I'm just nit-picking. Beautiful colour and contrast.
