Looking through your portfolio this image really jumped out at me. Beautiful shot. The speaker is somewhat distracting yet blends in perfectly. I dont know if I like it or hate it. The speaker that is.

Hi Megan,

Thanks for your comment on my picture. I don't visit Usefilm much these days since all the changes. Too many posts that never get any comments and too many average pictures getting rave reviews.

This was taken at a viewing area for Little Blue penguins in Oamaru,New Zealand. Apart from the strong graphic of the man made structure against the blue of the ocean, I felt compelled to make a statement about the world of eco tourism, the myth of New Zealand as a clean green place to visit.

The growth of global tourism to the more remote places in the world is having a hugh negative impact on the animal kingdom as well as consuming vast quantities of natural resources. Not to mention the pollution and climate warming effects modern jet airlines are having on the biosphere.

It seems that we are happy to spend vast sums of money making sure the tourists are happy, safe and secure in their "close encounters" with the natural world at the expense of the wildlife they come to see.

I have been interested in photography most of my life. Since switching to digital cameras about four years ago my work has become more illustrative rather than pictorial. I enjoy working with Photoshop and also now putting images to music for digital slide shows. I love getting out into the Otgao landscape when the light is at it's best, early morning and later in the day. I also find the Winter light is great and just before of after a storm. It makes for a more dramatic landscape. Mostly I'm self taught from books and magazines but find the web is a great source of information. There are a lot of very talented photographers willing to share their knowledge.

Best of luck with your own photography and struggle to develop you own style and make pictures for yourself first and others second.

Regards

This is a beautiful photograph. The colours are extremly pretty. Almost makes you want to go on a holiday to the beach. You are very talented.

I’m a student and I was hoping that you would help me out with one of my assignments. All it involves is critiquing on some images and writing a bit about the photographer and their world. Any information about this photograph would be great. Like what time of day it was taken, what you were thinking when you took it, what you were trying to achieve. Things like that. It would also be a major help if you could send me a bit about your self. Why do you take photographs, how long you have been doing it, did you do any courses on photography.

Please email me at george_almighty@hotmail.com

Thank you so much
Best Regards
Megan

Marvelous. Three fields of colours. First (by looking at the thumbnail) I thought it was a painting in a room or something. It must be the view from a boat. Great! 7+

if I were not tied up to my screen, I would follow your visual Siren's song immediately.

a nearly abstract great natural spectacle...

The roof is cantilevered over a viewing stand at a wildlife area. At night many Little Blue Penguins come ashore here. Not my idea of Eco-tourism. But at least it keeps the most dangerous creatures on Earth (humans)seperated from the animals.

Soothing? Through a Tannoy speaker? It wouldn't have soothed ME... more like set my teeth on edge. But the beautiful sea would have made up for that. What IS the structure above? Is it a bridge or pier? or perhaps a promenade? This shot hides enough detail almost to count as an abstract. The contrast of colours, tones and textures makes a lovely image.

Thank you Richard I am honoured you find this a worthy image. It is not a composite, it's as taken with just minor adjustments to saturation. Regards John

Thanks Christian, the slope is just sloppy work on my part. We are having a big debate here in New Zealand on who owns the sea bed and foreshore. We are also now finding out that Eco Tourism has very real detremental effects on the wildlife tourists come to see. This series is my reaction and comment on our/human stupidity in relationship to our environment. Regards John

Chris, this is the Southern Hemisphere, all the oceans drain that way down towards Antarctica. Cheers John

Love it. I could make Richard T's comment mine. Really nice eye to have spotted this. I would have probably worked to get the ceiling and speaker out of the way and brought a standard shot - but you have worked something different and well composed.
The horizon does tilt to the right, but not the ceiling. I sometime get this kind of hard to control distortion with the 18-70 mm when at the widest setting. Just got a 20mm Nikkor. I'll see if it works any differently.
Yeah, D70 is a great gear.

This is brilliant with essentially three bands of highly saturated color, intensely graphic with a lot of impact. This could have been produced in camera or assembled in PS. Who cares? The final effect is what matters. After a couple of years on usefilm, I think I'll start a favorites collection. This image will be the first.

Great shot, and excellent title, John.

Great colours and thirds, John, but the horizon seems to be leaning a little to the right. In fact, there goes a little of the water now, leaking out of the side of my monitor!! ;-))
Kind regards, Chris

very well done - I love the color and the composition and then there is that speaker that I hope is on real load to drown out the sound of the stupid waves..K
