About Maximón (Mah-shee-MOAN), San Simón, or whatever other local name he's called, it is estimated that 15 to 20 shrines or santuarios are set up to worship this deity ... or saint ... or demon ... (depending on who you ask).

The anthropologists say all sorts of things, many of which are likely true, as far as they go. He's a throwback to a Mayan god - he's an indigenous representation of San Simón - he's a deification of Pedro de Alvarado (a conquistador who brought Guatemala into the Spanish empire and made it nominally Catholic).

The religious authorities have other ideas - to the Catholics he's an unauthorized and sometimes outlawed saint, to the fundamentalists - you can figure that out for yourselves!
People bring him rum, tobacco, incense, money in exchange for their prayers.

Whatever other learned people say abbout your "A reason to believe?", Alison, I say it's a great photo, colorful, with movement and a richness of articles, each one with its meaning and each one caught sharply so that it is not swallowed up by the multiude.
Thanks for your warm, generous comment on my "Ginger in a serious mood".
Regards,
Rafi

Neal, I am a Reiki Practitioner, almost a Master , by the way you can ask me whatever questions you have. I found out Timothy Ray Miller from the quote is a clinical psychologist. they have some of his used books on half.com, but I don't think there quote books. Alison

So you are a healer. I suspected as much but thought it might be too personal a question to ask. Anyway, I think this is a very potent picture, filled with emotion and intensity. More than simply pleasing, it reaches out and touches us.

Dirck , this is a great shot. I think the place is called Nim Pot (sp?). Actually that I think is where I got this shot, they had made a shrine in the back to Maximon and people would actually come and pray to him there.

Ken thanks for the great comments on my images. I would love to see India one day, mainly for the shrines. I have a couple of Indian Gods, Ganesha, Krishna, Hanuman etc. The painting in my (A piece of me) photo, was painted by my sister of my dogs, She is really a great artist. Alison

Very interesting picture with equaly captivating story. I like the look on this deity/devil. He seem to bemused about people's caprecious behavior of offering just about anything that pleases them. May be he is intoxicated by all those rums.

In India, its the same. There are so many gods and godmen. Millions of statues and millions of shrines.

There is one temple called - Thirupathi venkateswara. He must be richest god in the world. People offer money and gold. Once a golden bra !!! was found in its collecting box. Perhaps someone was having breast cancer and wanted cure.

Some rich people will use the temple to throw away the 'black' money. Sometimes millions of bills have been found offered by some annonymous devotee !!!.

What ever it is - people are the same the world over. In Goutemala, it has taken its own south american hue.

Thank you for showing this interesting side to Gutemela.

regards,
ken.

Found it! Like I said, not a great shot but kind of fun. This was in Antigua at that store near the arch.

Cool shot, Alison! I like the expressiveness of the man's hands - you can almost hear his pleas as he lays out his troubles! Maybe try to bring out the back wall a little by lightening?
Somewhere in my last batch of photos from Guatemala I have a not-great one of a bunch of little Maximónes - I'll see if I can find and post it here...
