forgot the question ! How would i shoot it today, in about a month I'll be able to tell you as I am going back. Ok here goes. i think i should get there before the sun was even up for the first go. then i could get the water showing as a silky ribbon, Manual or Aperture Priority F 22 for slowest shutter speed. then after the sun came up. then late afternoon, then again after the sun was below the horizon setting. morning shot should be really warm, after sundown it would be really cool mid moring and late afternoon would have shadows on different parts of the canyon.

Jim this is a excellent image, your composition is awesome.
I was there once and the people I was with didn't want to spend much time in the park. :( Never seen this.
Beautiful.

I WAS THERE!!!!!! Oh WOW!!! I was standing at probably the same spot!!!!! I just don't believe it! :-))
Gosh Jim ... I still remember that day so well!! it was the 8th August 2002 and our third day in Yellowstone ... cold as hell, all of a sudden. I still asked "Do you think we will see snow?" because you don't know it, but I have never seen snow in my life! And can you believe it ... an hour later it snowed!!!!! :-))) Unbelievable experience!

I am still staring at your image ... the memories come flooding back!

Classic shot! The lighting here can be quite tricky. Your exposure seems quite well balanced. Nicely done.

I have a similar uniform, Tee shirts, dockers, moccasins, sun glasses ! I will be on UF in the evenings as I have maintained a dialup just for travel. So I will be able to post live from the field ! Wouldn't that be a great way to make a living. I'll watch for you. I have a silver van with N0exp on my license plate.

Beautiful scene with quite a classic composition! How would you shoot it differently today?

Maybe we will bump into one another during our trips to Wyoming. If a strange person comes up to you and starts asking odd questions, don't flip out! I will wear my Usefilm uniform (comfy clothes, camera around my neck) so you will won't be alarmed.

lovely landscape Jim and very well composed; maybe because of my eyes or the haze in the air, but there is lack of sharpness in the image; I wish this image was really sharp to stress this incredible beautiful view;

best regards
Lukasz

Think of any superlative Jim, and it applies here. What a magnificent place and this shot goes a long way to doing it justice. I bet the noise is something else also. Pity we can't photograph sound.

Hi JIm,

You're so right, I also have photographed this very scene, photos just can seem to convey all the beauty and the vastness of these falls. Yellowstone is truly a photographer's delight!!

You've done a great job on this image though, nice composition! And the water is even bluish!!

Very nice job,
Lori :)

thanks for your comment on my 'Noisy sculpture'!!

Don

Yes I am getting ready. it takes me about 2 hours flat to load and go. I need clothes, cameras, laptop, cooler stop at the bank and I am gone. I was not going this year but LEE HARRIS posted some photos, then TIM SHUMANN posted some photos all of the mountains and now I am in need of my altitude fix !!

First time I was there was about 1950. Still a great place to see. Bet you are getting about ready for another trip west or someplace......I like the blue haze in the background. Don.

Tim
It is a really breath taking view depending on the light. I remember the first time I ever saw it, I had walked out to the viewing area and looked out at the falls, I could not take a photo for like 20 minutes I just stood there dumbfounded. The valley is situated so late afternoon and early morning seem to be the best time to shoot it. I cropped out the sky since it was washed out.
thanks for the comment
