About ?an England!!

This is the delightful little church in the wonderful Somerset village of Sandford Orcas ~ built right alongside the manor house.

I took this shot this afternoon on my little outing, stopping at villages like Marston Magna, Corton Denham and South Cadbury ~ it was an idyllic afternoon!!

Best regards to all,

Chris

Thanks for the patient and detailed reply. I might have known this would be the very best you could possibly have done!

For England and St. George eh Chris. Given the circumstances you've produced an amazing image. Another perfect portrayal of the peace and tranquility to be found in and around Devon/Somerset/Dorset.

Further to my previous reply, Roger, I've found that I did actually take a picture of the archway under which I stood to take my church image. I attach it here, (with explanatory notes :>)), for your interest.
Best regards, Chris

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your comment. I often think it would be helpful to load up a diagram of the photographer's position on taking any given photo, giving the viewer some idea of what he was up against when he took it!!!

As it is, this shot was taken in a most delightful, yet somewhat awkward setting. My back was literally up against a wall ~ the wall of the manor house that is built alongside this fine old church. I was actually standing under an archway that leads through to a courtyard, in which a number of other old houses stand. I guess they were originally all a part of the manor owner's estate. The wall you see on the right is part of that archway ~ I was standing against the other side of it, which forms part of the manor house's side wall.

It really is a most beautiful setting, and one I stumbled on purely by chance as I made my way slowly down this virtually one track road.

Hence the title of the picture, as I believe the whole scene to be quintessentially English!!

Best regards ~ I'm off to prepare for a wedding!!

OK, today is "let's be picky" day. I would have liked a bit of a gap between the church and that wall (or is it perhaps a monument) on the right. I see its use to frame the RHS, and to some extent balance the dark trees that frame the church on the left, but I find it a bit too close, almost oppressive, encroaching as it does on the church. I would like to have seen more of that fascinating wall and would have moved around to the left and a bit further back to get it in better balance (and open up a bit of space on the right, see above). And I would also have reduced the width of those dark trees on the left, again too heavy for their roll of framing the church. Chris, this is such a good image as it is, I hope you won't mind me musing aloud on how it MIGHT (just might!) have looked even better?

I do hope the flying of the flag is not against the law Chris, I would hate to think the church is not upsetting those ungrateful forigners who have come to regard England as their homeland.
Beautiful setting old boy, keep em coming.

Chris
another great shot. I am going to pass through some of our town and shoot some of the more stately homes so you can see the difference. The buildings over there are wonderful. I really love them.

lovely lights and composition Chris; I like the wall on the right - it makes a natural frame for the picture, I wish it was not so dark on the left side in the trees;

really good shot and wonderful church :-)
