Wow Patrick! Coming from you that's praise indeed. Thanks, I'm greatly encouraged. In Japan we have a lot of problems with "white skies," but some of the countryside is really beautiful... so I'll be trying again.
Folks, to see the inspiration for this shot, be sure to visit Patrick's great portfolio and the website he has created with other gifted photographers. It's really, really special!

Gorgeous. The words "beautiful" and "serene" have already been used to describe this photo, so I'll have to make do without them. I like the deep depth of field. The crystal clarity. The full range of colours from vibrant green to the most delicate, watercolour-like pink and purple wash on the mountain. You have done Japan justice with this one. Rgds, Svend

Thanks John, your comments are deeply appreciated. I hope you enjoy a long and happy retirement with plenty of good photography! I am of retiring age but with teenage kids I can't afford to do that for a good few years, yet. I'm afraid I'm a wide-angle guy, and seldom think what effect a narrower angle would have... tend to go the other way into panoramas and even, recently, into 360-degree wrap-around panoramas. To me, 50mm is telephoto!

Good evening Roger. This really is an evocative image. Sorry I've been busy getting ready to retire and haven't had time to keep up on usefilm enough. This is clearly the best of your recent posts IMHO. As I looked through your portfolio again and with this image in particular it struck me how the hazy skies are a limiting factor in Japan. I was wondering if you had ever thought of playing with neutral gradient filters to bring down the sky brightness and pump up contrast? Ive used them on snow covered mountains here in California and had good results. I dont like the tinted ones though. A comment on this particular image. As nice as the reflection is, how would the image look if you used a longer focal length lens and shot from a slightly lower position. that would reduce the amount of reflection which is a major part of this pic. To me is seems just slightly out of balance. I could be wrong and its clearly an issue of style. just a thought. Keep shooting fella. - JB

Hi Roger, I think the pastel tones in the sky create the mood in this image, so therefore, I think a bluer sky would only change that mood. And as you say the mood is as you remember it, I'd say it's perfect as it is..... ) Very well composed, simple, in essence quite centered, but not static. Very tranquil and scerene shot, I like this one alot! (see what it did? It made me poetic... )
Cheers,
Hugo

Desert Blu took the words right off my keyboard, Roger! A very calm and lovely image. The sky looks bluer in the reflection than in the sky itself ~ was the water very blue? (As opposed to the muddy brown colour of so many of our lakes?!) Kind regards, Chris
