I'm curious, Jeff...did you go into Photoshop levels and click on Auto? The purple tree trunks are what make me suspect this. I've clicked on auto before, and gotten some really funky results. Those that are much different than just raising or lowering white or black points.
The contrast and composition are really splendid, it's just the color balance that seems strange.
