Jimmy, Thanks for your honesty. You know I was going to reply with your exact comments re: the mind seeing what isn't there. But hey we all see pics a little differently right? That is what makes UseFilm so unique and fun. Everyone has their own style and what works for one person doesn't always work for another. Best regards, Bill

Hi Bill, Beautiful job on this macro shot. Don't let that little shadow bother you. I think that one's mind fills in the stem. My mind did because I didn't notice it until I read the others comments. Regards, Jimmy And, thanks for commenting on my photos.

Hi Bill See just below the flower, there is a dark shadow on the stem? That, IMO, gives the impression that the flower is separate from the stem and leaves, thus "floating".

Linn,
Thanks again for your comments.
As I haven't any reference to go by I am learning as I go along. It's comments by people like you and Andy that help me to see what I need to do in order to improve. Never went to Photo school so do not know the finer points of a good picture. Perhaps some books are in order.
I am not sure I understand what you mean by "floating"? As I see it,the flower is just fine as it is, and didn't think to do anything about the shadow.
I do appreciate all the critique of course. I learn to see my pics differently as a result of all the help I get here at Usefilm!
Take care, Bill

Andy, Thanks for your nice comments. As for the shadow I didn't notice it. I had an onboard flash that was at -05 setting and if I used anything stronger I would have blown out the rest of the shot. These P&S cameras have there limitations. Perhaps a clamp light next time. Bill

Some people ignore flower shots completely referring to "13 in a dozen" etc. That?s what makes it so challenging. How many times have you looked for a really beautiful congratulatory card? This one is a winner ... a perfect, simple and harmonic composition, good colours, sharp details. All what?s needed for an excellent flower image; congrats!

Hi Bill Did you know the Alstroemeria is my favourite flower? :-)) Yup! I can't get enough of them, specially if they are pink :-) I bought a bunch yesterday - the most stunning lilac/lavendar hues - can't wait for them to open!!!
Great background! Welcome to the world of frustration :-)) I think your first try is excellent - I agree with Andy though that the shadow is distracting. It seems to make the flower float, which is not what you want.
You really did this Inca (that's what I know this flower as) proud - well done.

Excellent shot Bill, all your macros are crisp and clear. I like the leaf in this shot as it adds balance and dof. I don't know why but the bit of shadow on the leaf (not the stem) just below the bottom petal keeps popping out at me.
Awesome detail on the flower. Great Job.
