I was dismayed to find that a number of photos that I took with a newly-acquired Exa 1c SLR were out of focus. The camera has an old-fashioned waist-level viewfinder with a pop-up magnifier, and unfortunately this particular one did not have a focusing screen to provide a split-circle focusing aid. All of which makes accurate focusing difficult, especially in low light.
My first reaction was disappointment at the larger than expected number of out of focus photos. Sort of like taking a sip from a cup, expecting juice and getting milk.
I think this portrait of my son is ok. I had to get over my bias in favour of "in-focusness". I haven't gone over to the Blur School, but I do think it pays to keep an open mind. :>
I'm not a blur fan myself - I sharpen everything - but this does works remarkably well - perhaps it's because of the pose, expression or toning.
Thanks also for the story behind the image - I find these fascinating and a very enjoyable part of looking at your photographs. I really need to follow your example.
