About That is what it is called - black as the night with a brilliant flash of colour in the centre.

I know this is not the greatest of images but I wanted to share - I have never seen a black flower before! Pity that the water marks are so evident and where the flower's folds make such a dark shadow. One day when I have more experience, I might just be able to capture it better :-)

Linn, I find it hard to get the darker color flowers such as black/blue and this came out fine. Unusual color here. Very well done! Regards...

Yeah - I read somewhere (on UseFilm) about taking a small piece of black velvet along. Must get some! I know all too well about trying to block out some unwanted object! :-)

Something else to think about is having a sheet handy for quick backgrounds. When taking flower pics in my yard and the light isn't cooperating I like to bring out the dark green sheet and lay it over whatever I can see in the background. This way I know that the most important thing in my shot will be the flower, not the bright leaves in the bg.
I have never seen a black pansy before either! Thanks so much for sharing!

Jimmy, don't apologise :-) I remember my hubby using a tissue when he photographed a (real) moth one night. I am putting a tissue into the camera right now, for this very reason :-) Thanks for the tip :-)

I can see why it is named "Halloween." I too, have never seen a black flower. Thanks for posting this one; and, it is a very good macro shot.

On using your flash for a shot like this one, you may want to place one layer of tissue over your flash to diffuse the light. I use my pocket handkerchief for this. On close-ups and macros you'd probably get an over exposed shot in most cases. For my "Happy Mother's Day" post I used my flash so the purple clematises would not be under exposed. I was far enough away that I didn't need to diffuse the flash. Of course you may already know all this stuff. If so I apologize.

Guido, it didn't even cross my mind! Thanks for the hint - I would like to go back there this week and then I will definitely try it. I also had to deal with a stiff little breeze. Another problem is that these decorative flowers are all in white styrofoam planters. So I have to try and avoid that, plus all the white labels that they stick into the containers.
Hopefully these black ones are still there when I go back :-)

nice black flower Linn.
Did you try to fillflash it? You know, using the flash outside in daylight as an extra.

Great Linn, I have never seen a black pansy before, but I think the Bat Flower is very dark and black in parts.
