oh no .. i'm not a teacher at all :) .. i'm only a complete beginner at photography :s
photography is more art and passion than profession and techniques. you have the talent and i have no doubt that you'll gain the knowledge. just be aware that once photography becomes a profession and techniques you might loose the joy of it. go easy on photography and do it as a hobby.

the larger the f no. the wider the aperture and consequently, the shallower the dof.
f/11 would increase the dof, while a f/2.8, for instance, would blur the background.
set your camera to aperture priority. then try increasing and decreasing the aperture and notice how the shutter speed will react to compensate for the exposure.
you will notice, as an example, at f/5.6 the shutter speed is 1/500 sec. and when you shift to f/22 the shutter speed decreases to 1/30 sec.
this means that the f/22 smaller than f/5.6 and allows lesser light to strike the sensor. that's why the shutter speed decreases to allow the sensor to receive the light for a longer time, in order to get the right exposure.
best wishes, ned

hmm.. ok let me get this straight... which one is considered wider? f4 or f5.6? when i try manual focus, and change the aparter from 5.6 to a bigger number (15 for example) it maximizes the dof..!

{K:11928} 5/11/2004

don't even mention it :)
the max. opening of the diaphragm (aperture size) f/4 is for 70mm focal length to somewhere in the middle of the zoom range, then it will suddenly jump to f/5.6 to the end of the range, 300mm.
as you know, the wider the aperture the shallower the dof. however, you should pay more attention to camera shake at wide apertures as a slight shake can significantly affect the sharpness.
regards, ned

really? I never knew that.. you see I've never taken any photography class.. (except a workshop about creative photography which had nothing to do with equipment..!).. so every technical thing i know is by reading and trying to concentrate real hard..!!!!!! as for Nick's question... I'm not sure.. from what I know there are three 75-300 mm lenses... a non-USM version, a USM version and a USM version with IS (Image stabilization).. I think mine is the second one..! but not sure.. let me check when I reach home and get back to you...

Rawabi .. you haven't answered Nick's question: is it canon 75-300 (F2.8)?
i believe that f2.8 lens is much more expensive than that!! if it's f2.8 then send me 5 lenses
As a rule of thumb shutter speed shouldn't be lower than the focal lens .. this means you shouldn't go lower than 1/300 sec. when shooting @300mm!

thank you Nick.. :) my new lens is great.. but kinda heavy for me..! :P so if the shutter speed is less than 1/50 i get blurry images..! but then again i'm getting used to it.. I love the DOF though.. it's great.. :)

MACRO! that's nice. so we shall see more still life macro soon .. or maybe insects ;)
i've read an article in Practical Photography or Photo Answers that compare between various types of macro equipment .. it was very simple comparasons, but very interesting as it sums up the pros & cons for close up lens, macro lens, billows and extension tubes.
i'll try to find it, scan and send it to you.

oh yes I know.. I got mine for 850 dirhams (around $230).. and the other 75 - 300 mm "IS" is for 2,000 something dirhams...!! :-/
I think currently I'll concentrate on closeup filters and extension tubes, for macro photography.. I'm not allowed to wander out a lot so macro is more helpful for me...

I HATE TRIPODS TOO! I HAVE A MONOPOD WHICH CAN GIVE MORE FREEDOM THAN A TRIPOD. I USUALLY USE SUPPORTS WHEN SHOOTING AT EXTREME TELE, SUCH AS TREE TRUNK, BARRIER, LIGHTPOST, CAR TOP, MY BACK PACK ... ETC. ON TOP OF THAT, THE FASTER THE LENS (E.G. F/2.8)THE HIGHER THE SHUTTER SPEED.
IS (IMAGE STABALISING) TECHNOLOGY IS A BIG ASSISTANCE .. BUT A BIG AMOUNT OF MONEY AS WELL! :)

I don't think I'll consider anything more powerful than the one I already have.. 300mm is good enough cuz i just HATE using a tripod..! and it'll be too heavy without it..! and if you are planning to photograph birds and animals like I do then it'll be not practical at all..

yeah, that's the OPPRESSORS' policy "Punish all for one's sin" .. what a policy! lol
i agree with you about that lens .. i'm considering a fast prime telephoto lens .. but it's only a metter of budget!

well Ned, serves men right for treating women badly all over the world! lol...
The lens is cool.. kinda heavy though.. which means if the lighting is not strong the shots will be blurry.. especially that I have very shaky hands! :-/ but during the day time it's cool :)

Saeed are you sure it's a female? from what I know birds are different that mammals and humans.. the male has an XX chromosome while the female has XY.. which means that the male is more colorful and "prettier" than the female! lol.. like peacocks for example..! ;-)

" Lionel Richie featuring Enrique Iglesias - To Love A Woman "
Enrique: I don't know what it is but she drives me crazy I don't know what she does but she drives me wild If only she could let me be the man I wanna be Well she can leave me helpless as a child
Lionel: I don't know how it is but she has the power She can make me laugh when I wanna cry (oh yeah) She tells me that I'm in control but I know it's just a lie
Both: And I don't mind oh Will she love you tomorrow like she loves you today She can keep your heart guessing but she's yours if she stays And that's what it feels like To love a woman To love a woman
Enrique: When you're looking in her eyes you can see forever (forever) You're captured by the beauty of her soul (oh yeah)
Lionel: You know you're never gonna find a woman like this again
Both: So don't let go oh (don't let go)
Will she love you tomorrow like she loves you today She can keep your heart guessing but she's yours if she stays And that's what it feels like To love a woman To love a woman
Oh she can make your day Oh she can take it away (take it all way) And oh whether it's wrong or right You know it in the end you'd do it all again To love a woman Just to love a woman (uh huh)
Oh you know (yes I know, yes I know) She loves you tomorrow like she loves you today (well she love you) She can keep your heart guessing but she's yours if she stays (she's yours if she stays) And that's what it feels like (I'm gonna say it) And that's what it feels like (what it feels like oh) And that's what it feels like To love a woman To love a woman (mm hmm) Yes to love a woman
