Hi Brigitte,
I must confess that the horizontal version is better and I think the reason for that is the fact the sunset is diminished by the inclusion of the tree tops. This is still a great picture.
Best regards, Maarten

Oh, I forgot to mention that I edited out the stump which I thought was distracting. And added a frame. Here's the same thing done with the horizontal image. What do you think?

Hi Maarten, sorry it took so long to respond. Thank you very much for the kind comments and guess what? I happened to have a vertical too... it does look different though... what do you think? Which is your preference?

I am so glad you captured it too. This is an incredible sunset. Great colors and silhouette. Nice work. Thanks for your comment on "Dressed in White". I found this peacock not too far from where I live. Alamo TN.

Maarten, here's the vertical I had of this scene. Hope you like it. My preference is the horizontal actually, but both have a pleasing perspective to offer. Thanks for the kind remarks.

I love the composition and the colour in this one, Brigitte. I hope you have a vertical shot of this as well, just in case a magazine wants it.

Thanks for the kind comments. Just a note, there is no auto-focus on my camera, eventhough I used an AF lens (what can I say, I got a great deal on it and it works great with my older model Nikon FG). Also, this shot was taken as I was driving along a road and happened to be "taken" by the scene, so I quickly pulled off to the shoulder of the road to steal this image -- hand held! Too bad I was in a hurry, but eventho, I was still pretty happy with the outcome.

Seems a bit soft. Generally it's better to manually focus sunsets as the AF doesn't do all that well in dark conditions. Also (as mentioned previously) a faster shutter spped will intensify the color and tone down that hot spot. Keep shooting!

The colors are just breath taking. Gotta love the Velvia for doing that. :) I think the composition is great but I'm wondering how much you opened the lens up for this shot. Its seems like the landscape behind the trees is just a tiny bit soft which indicates that maybe the DOF could have been a wee bit deeper. But this is very very nice nonetheless.
