Oh, you will be surprise for my lighting. I use only one office lamp on the side, with two little bubbles of 40 Watts. that is all ;-) but I use some mirror for reflections and I put it very close because when you have a nice light it is sharper.
I do some options on my Canon, like putting the ISO 50 all effects OFF or Low Sharpening LS, and Tungsten or AWB..and I play with the light, of course MACRO option is ON.
I hope that I helped you a little.

You said it: a beautiful design! But the colors help too. Very good job. Regarding my Old Gate, the building was white with light blue trimmings, the gate black. There was not color enough in the image so I converted it to sepia.
